As above, I have a 29er hardtail with 30t chainring up front and 11-42 at back ( extender )but was thinking of trying a turbo trainer on it . Would the gearing be too low ? Was thinking of a cycle ops which automatically changes the resistance . Thanks

Richie

I use 1x9 on my turbo. It is an old 26" mtb, with a 46t ring on the front with a road cassette on the back (11-28 I think). The ratios work fine for everything I have used it for. Lots of Sufferfest and lots and lots of TrainerRoad. I hardly ever use the 11t sprocket so could have probably have gone for a slightly smaller front ring. This is on a Cylops Fluid 2 trainer.

I think you will need a bigger front ring.

I think you'll be ok to sit and spin doing LSD, but you'll be under-geared to get off the seat
