Just gone 1x10 for first time using Shimano HG 500 11-42 cassette, kmc 10 speed chain, Works 32t oval mounted on xt M786 double with xt m786 rear mech and gear hanger extender. Fitted in a bit of a rush but shifting all good no excess nose and no back pedalling issues.

Went for one 28 mile ride yesterday and teeth on 42t ring chipped and hooked.

I did not check chain line and presume that is problem?

Would removing spacer on drive side bottom bracket help. Oh and a new cassette probably!

Thoughts appreciated

Anyone?! Another ride and I'll probably need a whole new drivetrain! Worried I have made some school boy error

Better start stocking up on cassettes.. you can use my BC code for CRC and buy them in bulk....

Looks normal to me, just the paint coming off.

The teeth are supposed to look like that..

Having said that, that chainline looks a bit off - the outer of a double is a bit too far out so I'd be moving a spacer over.

idiotdogbrain - great name and just how i feel!

I cant believe it is supposed to look like that... but it is. Ill play around with spacer and see how i get on.

On a positive note it all works together sweet thanks to those cheapy hanger extenders

Thanks all.

your picture isn't good enough quality for my old eyes to see the wear. Are you sure it's not just the shifting profile of the sprocket. ie. shorter/shaped teeth to allow the chain to drop down to a higher gear and pick up to the lower gear smoothly? you can see them clearly here in this ultra dorky youtube video

I can't imagine using the 42t sprocket for more than about 5% of any ride and even with terrible chainline can't imagine noticable wear coming from a few miles use. Alu cassette sprockets are a stupid idea though (kinda partly why I rarely use my lowest sprocket on my 11spd bikes. (10 speed I only run 11-36 full steel sprocket cassettes)

thanks geex, you and idiotdogbrain are correct they are meant to be there which never crossed my mind. Apologies for photo quality I just cant seem to work out how to post from flickr!

Aye that is a bit geeky, all the same those american youtube films.

I do wonder long term how that alloy cog will stand up and with my fitness it will be used alot...

If it gives you more confidence in the cassette, I’ve never worn the big alloy sprocket on my 1x systems to the point of skipping, the 11 tooth always starts skipping first. The alloy sprockets usually look bad but don’t skip.

I usually run a 34 tooth up front on 650b wheels.

Thanks jamesoz,  while.googling the main issue with 1x was some SRAM cassettes breaking teeth and early sunrace ones bending but they were isolated examples.so did.not expect any problems except chain wear.

Cloudnine I'll still take that code!

Yeah those missing teeth are to help shifting. I was similarly concerned on my first MTB about 25 years ago 🙂

Molgrips I really do belong back in 1996 riding my merlin ally frame and Indy xc's. Never thought I'd buy a cassette that looked like this one though.
