My old threads are closed. So just some notes from my recent Sunrace 11-46 experiment, cool starry bra and all that.
Thought I'd try it with my adapted 10 speed mech (Deore M615 clutched with Rad Cage) first to see if it's a goer. It's not without using a thinner nut on the cable stop bolt or bending the the cable stop arm outward as it contacts the 46t when on the 15t.
An 11 Speed M8000 XT medium cage mech sorted it straight away.
Conclusions: As well as the cage being tucked further under with newer mechs and the cage springs being stronger. The cable stop arm is also shorter so as to not foul the bigger sprockets, where clearance is very tight.
Yet another hurdle/consideration for all you 1x10 cheapskates like me
Good stuff.
Am i right that optimal chainline for 1x10 on 135mm dropout is 50mm ...is this pushable to 52mm or would that give to much cross chaining in the big rear gears.
reason i ask is i cant get anything but a 32 tooth on a 50mm chain line i live in a very flat area and would prefer a 36 tooth.
Hmm, i've got a 42-11 to fit and i'm hoping my xt (possibly slx) 10speed clutch mech will be ok, i did use it with a 40 trex once before, i was considering a goatlink but will try without first. Relying on the long b screw being enough. 46 is a big step though, 30t should be ok with the 42 for a winch gear round here.
10 sod mech is "ok" but 11spd xt works much better. Designed for wide range cassettes & pull ratio is the same.
My RadR caged zee with Pilo mech hanger runs cleanly on the 11-46, but with a tightened clutch struggles to shift on to the 46, but perfectly fine when the clutch is off, so may tweak the clutch tension.
Are you folk using 11sp mechs on 10sp shifters/cassettes?
I thought 10 and 11 speed mechs had different pull ratios
I thought 10 and 11 speed mechs had different pull ratios
the ratio is controlled by the shifter, not the mech
the pull is controlled by the shifter; the ratio is a characteristic of the mech
My Rad caged deore 10 speed mech copes very well with the 11-46 sunrace cassette. To be perfectly truthful, I've never used it in anger. It does shift to the 46t cog but I have yet to try it on a proper climb.
So, for clarification....all my bikes run 1x10 with expander ring. I have usually used a 10speed mech and shifter. Is it ok to use a 10sp shifter and an 11sp mech on these 10sp cassettes?
Yes you can
I was persuaded to try this the other way round, 10sp mech on 11sp cassette with 11sp shifter.
Mech had a RADR.
Shifting up was fine, but downshifts beyond mid cassette became very clunky/unpredictable. ‘Worked’ only in the broadest sense, I wouldn’t want that particular combo on my bike.
@ jimplops - Yes the clutch tension will sort it in most cases. All the Shimano mechs I've had so far have been too tight out of the box.
Oh and I've found chain retention on the top (46t) sprocket is perfectly normal with the same chainline as I had with 40t and 42t, both of which would drop when back peddling.
Problem is I've changed the cassette, chain and mech so can't say which component has influenced it most 😕
10 Speed mechs have been fine up until I got an 11-46 cassette. If you want absolutes 11 speed works flawlessly, assuming you have got all the other variables right 😆
Members have been saying for months that 11 speed mechs are the answer to 10 speed wide range woes, if only people payed attention.
the ratio is controlled by the shifter, not the mech
-What about a 10 speed block with a 9 speed rear mech?
I couldn't make that work.
Been running a XT thumbshifter, on friction mode, a 9 spd XTR rear mech SGS, 10sp chain and either 11-38 10spd or 11-42 11spd for the last year
Works faultlessly 😉
