Ok so I want to run 1x on a "gravel bike"

Any reason why this wouldn't work:

-42T narrow wide chainring
-Sunrace MS-3 11-42T cassette
-10 Spd Shimano road brifter
-10spd shimano MTB mech, with hole drilled to correct cable pull (or use a tanpan)
-Goatlink

Are there any "off the shelf" (sram or shimano) options for this range of 1x gearing with road shifters?

Pretty much all the SRAM shifters/mechs work together

Edit: Force 1 is probably what you want

Sram Rival 1, but it's 1x11 not 1x10

but it ticks the boxes really and has hydro discs too.

IMO, looks good on this bike...

edit: it's the cheaper sibling of "force 1" mentioned above

Ah Ok,

So there is sram force rival and apex "1" are the 1x rear mechs that can deal with 10-42 and single rings.

So to keep a lid on costs I could get:
chainring 42T
Sram Apex 1 mech (too new for a used one)
Sram Brifter 11spd brifters (used)
shimano xt 11x42 11spd cassette (new) or sram 11-42 pg-1130 or Sunrace CSMS8

Thanks chaps, this sounds better than bodging a shimano mech.

Would fitting a chainring to the inner position on a double be OK or do I need a new crank?

I'm using the superstars rings with 11 speed force everything else. They're working extremely well so I'd imagine 10 speed would be just as good. They're cheap at the moment too.

Any SRAM 10 or 11 speed rear mech work with any SRAM 10 or 11 speed sti.

I run a 44t hope narrow wide chainring, sunrace 11-42 cassette, SRAM apex sti and x9 medium cage clutch mech. It worked flawlessly during the dirty reiver on my whyte saxon cross and has continued to do so since.

It easy to remove the redundant shift lever from the left hand sti as well, although I am considering puting it back in without the pawl so in can use it to control a dropper seat post.

Confused... so the med x9 rear mech works fine with the 42t cassette?!

I assume its outside the design spec for the mech, hence why they have the "1" series mechs.

Yeah any of the medium cage mechs work fine, they don't even need much b tension adjustment.
The short cage ones will make the shift but can't take up enough chain slack when in the higher gears.
The medium cage mech and 11-42 is quite a common conversion for customers in the shop I work in.
