Hi everyone, i subscribed to the magazine last week so thought it was about time i joined the forum after being a long time lurker.
Anyway was just wondering what you guys use for securing your bikes,(done a search on here and cant find anything) i have just taken delivery of a what some of you guys might refer to as a filing cabinet (a new Orange Five Pro) as you'll know this cost me a lot of money and i don't want it to go walkabouts.
I've previously just used a cable lock round my bike and metal shelving unit i have in the garage but don't want to do this now, so my question is do i use some form or garage door defender on the outside (or does that look to people your keeping something expensive in there) or do i leave my garage door and use a decent chain and anchor set up inside the garage??? I would class myself living in a decent area of calderdale but i have had a car stolen off the drive before so that doesn't mean anything i suppose, cheers for any input guys and sorry for the long post,
Lee
Go with the ground anchor and motorbike chain/lock as a minimum.
there locks are good if you have an up and over metal door;

As they stop the door being folded but aren't too obvious. I'd put them top and bottom of the door sides (ie. two pairs).
have a look at the battery garage alarm thread down the list for more info.
Hi Lee,
I have purpose ground anchors with ball bearings knocked in to the bolt heads so they can't be removed.
I then use a Kryptonite D Lock through the anchor to which I secure other locks. I have two heavy duty motorcycle chain locks (bought from Aldi but are really good), a Kryptonite flex lock with a pad lock, then another two basic locks through the front wheel to my work bench. I also have another two locks that I place in stategic places.
The garage is also alarmed.
I'd recommend a ground anchor and as many locks as possible!!

YMake sure it is insured for where you intend to keep it. Your insurance company my insist on certain precautions, for example a solid secure gold lock. You insurance company may have limits as to the value of a bicycle it is happy to insure.
When it comes to trying to ensure it will stay if someone does try and steel it then I would recommend having a look here http://securityforbikes.com/ and getting the likes of a ground anchor or lock point and a good lock for the bike and then looking at making it harder to get into the garage in the first place.
Sorry to hijack OP, just a query on insurance as I am taking delivery of a new bike next week, is it just a case of adding on to house & contents cover ? Also any recommended insurance company to insure the bike in case it goes missing outside of the house?
Just ring your insurance company.
I'm with Sainsburys and pay an additional monthly premium to insure my bike as a specified item, it's currently covered up to 3.5k home or way. In the event of a loss I would need a receipt or a valuation report pre-dating the loss.
Obviously each insurer has their own specific terms but first port of call would be to ring them for a chat and discuss what options are available to you.
Thank you Endurokid, much appreciated.
Thanks for the responses guys, will go with the ground anchor and chains option I think and look into the alarm, I know I need to put it on the insurance, only sticky wicket with that is my Mrs sorts all that stuff out and I didn't tell her the correct price I paid for the bike if you know what I mean 😉 she would go mental if she knew, not that I'm under the thumb or anything but i bought a trek fuel 29er in December which I didn't get on with but you try explaining that to a women, she just thinks its a bike and why did I need a new one 😕
