is there such a thing?
no boost, no 1x, no bolt thru.
just a plain normal mountain bike for riding up, over, around, along and a bit down.
idea's please.
Scott scale?
idea's please.
Surely if you have a browse through your order confirmation emails you can daw up a comprehensive list?

Does that count? 😈
Whyte 529 mate.
29er
Normal gears.
Whyte 529
Your expectation of normal might be wrong \ out of date... bolt thru is now 'normal' imho for mountain bikes.
Agree with @TheGingerOne, QR is more abnormal than bolt through now. It won't be missed.
On One Inbred.
But then mine does have Enve Post, Enve bars, Carbon Wheeels and Chris King Everything else.
Surly Ogre?

in 35 years of cycling, i have never had a qr cause a single problem, both on and offroad.
i have threaded a 15mm bolt hole on a fork leg, and cracked the cinch mount on a fox 36 fork.
Surly Ogre?
that is for touring. this is for offroad.
Pinnacle from Evans

too small iain. 19'' for a xl is far too small.
Ton mate the 529 is big !!!
Straight or tapered headtube then?
I never had a problem with straight, but have no issue with all my mountain bikes now being tapered. That also is now the 'normal'.
I would also imagine that more people have failed to tighten a quick release sufficiently than have threaded a bolt through
Ton mate the 529 is big !!!
Nae disrespect, but you're one of the last folks on here I'd take a bike recommendation from......
Sorry.

Apart from "Boost QR" (110/141mm)... Speaking of which:
Far enough under £1k you'd have enough change to buy a front mech...
I've got one of those Frontier framesets sitting in a box at the end of my bed, bought on a whim in last week's sale. Seems nice enough - well finished, frame weighs 1.9kg in XL size. I was congratulating myself on buying a cheap entry into all the new standards (I'm still riding an old 26" hardtail). However, I've decided to send it back - concerned about the lack of industry back-up for the Boost QR dropouts. I also see no benefit to internal gear routing on a hardtail, it's just a maintenance headache. FWIW, I think it'd be easy enough routing a front mech cable through the dropper post cable routing, assuming you use a side swing mech.
Bizango with change to boot.
I'm selling a brand new Santa cruz Highball XL frame in matt black.
Orange Clockwork 100.
Very "normal".
I just built one up and it is very normal in a good way. And I'm used to 6" 26er slack-ish full suss.

This could be you Ton.
Bottle of Shandy Bass in the Camelbak.
Manfully trudging up t' Dale, hauling that there Genesis, like a wounded goat...
It could be you.

No problems at all I understand your point however that isn't just my opinion on it.
I believe the shop I bought mine from sold an XL model to someone north of 6 foot 5.
Trek superfly 5.
Nobeerinthefridge - MemberNae disrespect, but you're one of the last folks on here I'd take a bike recommendation from......
I'm sure the Whyte is a great bike but the beerless one has a point. Rode the 529 yet???
Spesh Rockhopper Pro?
No problems at all I understand your point however that isn't just my opinion on it.
Did the bloke who sold it to you tell you it was teh awsumz by any chance? 😛
Ton.
You might need to open up your options and reconsider the no bolt through bit as there seem to be very few bike now made with qr.
Did the bloke who sold it to you tell you it was teh awsumz by any chance?
I dont remember Mboy saying that no ????
Look Im not sure what peoples problem is here , Ton asked for a normal 29er and as I have a normal 29er I mentioned it.
As did the person below me.
Some of you lot need to get a life rather than trying to be keyboard warriors hiding behind the internet !
Need a hug? 🙂
Surely if you have a browse through your order confirmation emails you can daw up a comprehensive list?
Harsh but probably fair!

Hahahaha! The person who recommended it below you is the same person who sold it to you and is, in fact.....MBOY! 🙂
I have a serious question with genuine interest in your answer: If you rate the bike so highly, why have you comprehensively changed most of it's components, seemingly before it's even been ridden, for any length of time, at least? Isn't is therefore just the frame that you're recommending?

I'll have that Jones off you if it's going cheap...

Normally people don't start a forum thread to decide between steak and pizza though...
please explain that
You might want to consider the Cotic Solaris mk2.
Ton ..the Ogre is a karate monkey with braze ons (basically ) as i'm sure you know, and fits your requirements for simple off road too ..apart from the fork imho ( too harsh )
even if you run mudguards and a rack it's not a problem ..that's what i do.
why do you want yet another bike when you've just bought one that'll tick the boxes?
just fit a sus fork with lockout and your sorted.
as you may be aware ..i've bought a pugsley ...fat/29+ or even skinny tyred no probs . add a rack and guards ..it should do most things people of our age want !
Bill, noted mate.
Stanton sherpa?
I'm think you can run it with qr drop outs can't you?
https://www.stantonbikes.com/product/sherpa-853-next-gen/
Ads678, correct
Swopouts for single speed, 12×142 or standard QR
..but you'd struggle to build one for under £1k.
Based on geomtry and spec, the Whyte 529 looks spot on.
- 2x9, QR rear, solid frame & modern geometry.

this has grabbed my attention.
Careful with Cube Ton, they're a bit odd to ride. I've had a few (I built one up as a race bike for a season) and they're a bit brutal on the back end. Also have quite a steep head angle if that bothers you. On the flip side, they always come well spec'd for the money. Depends what you want to use it for, but I ended up swapping back to my carbon whippet (with 26 inch wheels) as I couldn't get on with the 29er Cube.
The Cube certainly edges the Spesh I mentioned on spec. Here is the link so you can compare:

I'd keep looking Ton till you find what you want. To explain why I say that, last summer I was sat on the beach telling the Mrs what I would like in a 29er to replace my Solaris. It was pretty old school but with the odd modern twist (tapered HT, bolt thru F&R but steep xc HA angle, skinny seatpost, steel, non pressfit BB). I did find it (Surly KM Ops) and I am pleased I stuck to my wishlist.
I'm happy with my Parkwood 29er, which you could build up or buy a full bike for under £1k, but they don't seem to be selling them at the moment (not sure if they've been discontinued or just are out of stock).
So, er, my post is useless.
Sorry.
The CUBE is quite focused, defined and racey... Are you looking/needing a lightweight race bike ?
how did you find the Ogre Ton... a bit harsh up front or maybe it's just me.
if yes another option I thought about is swopping for the S swift bike packing fork?
Are we looking for V brakes or centre pull top go with the QR?
Check Paul's cycles for cube HT bargains

just got back for a nice 25 mile mixed terrain ride with essell off here.
bike felt spot on to be honest. i bought the xxl size, and jim says it is the 1st bike he has seen me on that fits me right.
so hopefully for now, my search in over.
Have we missed some posts in here then?

no mate, i bought the ogre to use as a tourer, but i think it will do all i want so my search is now off.
I was also going to suggest the Parkwood 29er. I like mine but it seems only the 27.5 is on the site now.
Its quite normal I think
no mate, i bought the ogre to use as a tourer, but i think it will do all i want so my search is now off
for at least a week !
There is no way even the biggest parkwood would fit ton !!
i had a parkwood for a few months when the 1st came out. it was indeed too small in a xl.
why dont bike people realise that a 20'' frame in not xl.
I've said it before to you Ton but I'll chance an arm and try again.
Get something custom built for you...
Cannondale Trail SL 29er. I'm 6ft 4" I have an xl think it's 21 or 22" Really comfy frame. Decent geometry, decent spec. Wheels are crap and will need upgrading at some point. It's bloody fast at covering ground though. I use mine for all terrain touring. 40 miles plus very comfy. I put some schwalbe hurricane tyres on. Mud is not great but everything else it flies on.

It was always my intentions to build a longer travel 29er hardtail. I had asked on here for recommendations on hardtail frames a few months back.
I could of bought the 629 which is the model up from mine however and I said this at the time to Mboy that I much prefer the colour of the 529.
In standard spec it's a decent and solid bike if a little basic.
Hope that helps.
