Just found that the rims on my commuter are cracking around the spoke holes. Gutted.

I've found some Raleigh cheap 29er wheels on eBay but the inter rim width is 19c which is recommended for tyres down to 28mm, I've only got room for 25mm

Has anyone else tried a similar combo? The cheapest road disc wheels I can find are 4 times the price, but at the same time I do 200 miles a week on my commuter and I don't want it to burst into flames and kill me to pieces.

Probably wont be suitable for raod tyre pressures

another problem is some road brakes wont cope with a wide rim, you wont be able to adjust the pads properly.

It's a disc brake bike so width is fine for brakes, didn't think about pressures though good point.

Plenty of 19mm wide road rims that take 23 never mind 25 tyres fine. The rim-tyre reccomemdations are a bit old hat. Running a pair of 19mm disc rims with 25 tyres and 19mm road rim brake rims with 25mm tyres just fine.

You'll probably find you drop the pressure a bit anyway as the tyre has a larger volume on the wider rim.

Dunno. The rims I use, WTB i19 and superstar arc 22 cost more than that whole wheel. I might be less trusting of the rim hook design on those wheels.. but for the price might be worth a punt.

That's going to be a heavy wheel, 540g rim and plain gauge spokes. Eek.

Etrto is the old hat thing I was referring to. Defining tyre-rim combinations on the basis of widths alone is overly simple. Mavic is a bit of an old school company so seem to like to adhere to such things. I imagine they probably had quite a hand in etrto spec and it's progression to an ISO standard.

It doesn't take account of rim hook or tyre bead design. My experience of mavic rims is that generally they come up small on rim wall diameter, so tyres are very easy to get on... but are also more likely to pop off.

More modern rim designs and are far far better for tyre retention IMO.

Hmm, the mavic thing is concerning. Think I'll not be so tight and spring for some proper road wheels.
