[Closed] 1998 SIDs - what to do....?

I've got a pair of 1998 SIDs on the front of my Specialized S-Works XC bike. Very retro, really light and love it. But..... when trying to get air into forks (via a greased-up football needle into the rubber ring at the top of each leg), the rubber rings blew, and have slipped. The forks now don't hold any air.

The rings (/seals) are in the middle of the top acps on each fork, so I've been scouring the net/sales sites for an old pair for parts, but no sign. Anyone got any ideas on where I can get them?

Realise they are old though, and were bound to die one day.... So, if I can't get replacement parts, any recommendation on a new pair of forks? Will happily look second hand, but want some v light ~80mm travel XC forks. Also need them to have brake bosses. Thoughts? Fox vs. Rockshox?

Cheers!

I *think* I have a set of the original ones in the garage - I took the lower legs off to sort the stiction, then never put them back on again - all that about 6 years ago.

From memory they held air perfectly - whereabouts are you based?

Yeah Flooks would be your best bet I reckon! Or Retro Bike.

Nice forks those, still the lightest ever SID!

Are they not just wee o-rings?

I rode a set once, I consider them dangerously flexy!

Oh the flex! They gave me the fear, big time.

Oh yeah, they were insanely flexy, and didn't really move much, even the claimed 63mm was dubious, looked good though!

Definately try flooks, but I'm sure they sold off their earlier spares on Ebay a year or so ago.

Are they the same as these?

If so and you can't fix yours you can have them for £80 + shipping. You'll need to transfer the brake posts though.

No, that's a year 2000 SID XC by the looks of it.

1998 ones looked like this:

For some reason, I think its possible to upgrade these to schrader valves so you can attach a normal suspension pump to them and that I have the upgrade kit at home sat there for the last 8 years or so.

On the other hand I could be imagining this. I will take pictures tonight and get back to you.

I thought they still had gaiters on the legs on 98's?

Maybe the pair I gave to a mate were even older.. having ridden for years on rigid alloy forks he thought they were fantastic, it's all relative 🙂

Yeah they did as standard, that was just the photo that came up on Google. In fact, that could be the 'anniversary' ones anyway, rather than a pukka 98 pair, they had those decals though.

98 were the first SIDs IIRC, the 99 ones onwards had the white SID lettering.

the scrahder valves are in the middle and the old valves of which one leaks are on the outside.

Thanks for the help with this everyone!!!

scru98rkr[u] - so the only bit that would need to be changed is the nut at the top which houses the valve, that right? Or will more tinkering be needed?

Either way, are you needing to kleep hold of the upgarde kit, or happy to move it on?

I stumbled upon these last night. Maybe worth watching! They're 1999s, but still, they were £600 new. Mental really when S-Works bikes were £2400, that's not even half the price of current ones!

Either replace the CSU, or throw them in the bin.

Edit: Here's the original part, or you could fit a metal one, like this.

Personally I'd do neither, they go on eBay quite regularly, if you buy one that's a bit tatty otherwise just swap the lowers.
