Hi cheeky sausages. I have this old thing, a work in progress, and I don't know how to mend it.
It needs a new headset. Is it 1 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/4 inch threaded? I have no idea.
Can someone tell me what to buy on eBay for it. The bike is from 1985.
Also, I want to fit a triple on a standard shimano square taper...again, does anyone know spec of BB?
Hope you can help.
ps. if you have some nitto albatross bars for it can I buy them?
1" headset and 122.5/68mm bb
For the chainset.
Fit the new cranks.
Measure from the middle chainring to the centre of the seatpost
If its between 47.5-50mm it'll be fine.
If not you'll need a longer or shorter BB depending on the measurement
So say you fit the chainset and you measure 52mm you will need a shorter BB. the difference is between 2 and 4 mm, double this and subtract it from the axle length you have. Also if you want to keep it original you might get away with fitting new balls.
The headset is most likely 1", but you should measure just incase. Ideally measure the fork steerer but if you measure the stem shaft it should point you in the right direction. NB it could possibly be a BMX stem on a bike this age. It might even be printed on it if you remove it.
Yes, you'll be safer by doing some precise measuring of the headset. It'll be 1" threaded but there are two possible crown race sizes (internal diameter)....26.4mm and 27.0mm. In the past I've accidentally bought a headset with a 26.4mm crown race and the fork has been 27.0 and I've gently filed down the fork to match thinking that it won't take too long. It takes bloody ages! So just buy the right one 🙂
Sweet bike!
Go and ask my pals at retrobike. They will have all the exact details you need and will more than likely be able to get hold of a period correct triple chainset, headset and bull moose bars. 😉
Thats a beauty. Love the biplane fork.
Make sure you keep the original parts when you "modernise" it.
In fact I'd be tempted to store all the original parts safely - they really aren't great and won't last long if you use it. Grab a more common drivetrain (as you've done with the chainset) and wheels for use....
ah wow thanks cynical, kaiser, everyone for the replies... hear you about crown race issue I will take that onboard, and will go bother the people at retrobike too to see if I can source some parts. Would love some bull moose bars for it, but will likely go with a tall nitto stem, albatross bars, bar end shifters etc, in a kinda @ultraromance style!? 🙂 like this kind of nonsense http://www.bikepacking.com/bikes/rivendell-atlantis-ultraromance/
will definitely keep all the orig parts in the shed
