I'm looking for a new dropper to replace the one ride old OneUp that I can't seem to get working with my frame due to the way the outer moves. It gets caught on the pivot and stays open, which I'm gutted about as it's a nice post.
I don't really want to spend more than £200 and it needs to work with my Wolftooth remote which seems to limit me to the Brand X or the older PNW Bachelor.
So have I miss any others?
Which frame was it?
I'm looking at 170mm+ external droppers.
Have the OneUp on my hardtail, and it's ace, but thinking that I'll have a similar problem running one on my full sus.
@kelvin Cotic FlareMAX, I guess yours will be something similar providing I've got the right person?
Could a rollamagig fix the outer issue?
@fathomer, Sam had the same issue with his FlareMAX… he now has a RaceFace Turbine that works well. Not tried in my Rocket yet… but suspect I might have same issue… hole for cable assumes that inner will be moving, not the outer. I'm looking at lengths of 170mm posts, and they all look longer than the OneUp… so might go external to not have the cable attachment stuff at the bottom.
I've got a 1 ride old 31.6 brand x 170 stealth dropper you can have for a ton.
Pm me if interested.
The Brand X 170mm is £120 with code clear2019 plus a few quid cashback with Quidco
Must just be luck I guess, but I've been running a 170mm OneUp dropper on my FlareMax all summer without any problems.
Depends how close the bottom of the post is to the pivot I think. If there is enough room for the cable outer to move, then should be fine. Still planning on trying mine on the Rocket before looking at anything else (because it's a great post).
I'm gutted I can't get it to work. It's fine static but as soon as I get on the bike, which obviously compresses the suspension, it'll come back up bu won't stay put.
Having just had a quick measure, I maybe struggling to fit the Brand X/PNW in, they're both 498mm total length, I've got about 500mm from top of pivot to saddle rails 🙁
Just checked mine as I was intrigued to see why it works when yours doesn’t. Saddle rails to the middle of the pivot is 555mm. That’s a large frame and 170mm OneUp dropper. I’m 6’ with around a 33” inside leg. Hopefully that’s some help to anybody considering this frame/dropper combination.
@roverpig I've just had a look and I've got roughly 520mm form the middle of the pivot which means you've got a good 35mm extra room for the cable to move above the pivot.
Yes, that's probably what makes the difference. Although yours isn't actually hitting the pivot I guess you've got quite a tight turn to get the cable past the pivot and back into the bottom of the dropper. That extra 35mm or so on mine presumably gives it enough room to move. Shame as it's a good post, but only if it works of course 🙂
How about getting one of the travel reducers for the OneUp post and reduce the travel by the amount required to allow the post to keep working, probably the cheapest way to get around the problem.
I know this won't maintain the 170mm + drop you want, but the OneUp is the shortest post out there, so its unlikely any post of that length is going to work, as even the ones with the inner that actuates could be affected by how close the pivot is to the bottom of the post.
@Bigmantrials that's actually not a bad idea but I could end up with a 135mm dropper if I have to go to the same lengths as roverpig.
Ignoring saddle height initialy, set the post where you can get it to consistantly work, then set your saddle height and see how much you would need to reduce the travel.
Looking at the length of the OneUp posts, there is a 40mm total length difference between the 150 & 170mm posts, so if you end up with a drop of less than 150 after doing the above you might be better swapping out for the shorter post as it might give you more drop......
