I've had a bit of a go at finding 165mm cranks, which I've fancied for a while but due to quite a low BB on my stumpjumper evo, I reckon are becoming more desirable each time I ride!

Can anyone point me towards some. It's PF30 BB, so whatever limitations that gives, plus ideally 2x as I like to do the odd long steep climb on it.

Oh - and budget would mean probably Deore/SLX at best currently.

there always used to be a 165 at XT, not so sure "below" that

If that was the lower limit, I would probably stretch to it - I've not been able to actually find any for sale though!

IIRC: Shimano XT are available in a 165mm double, they'll be a 24mm axle though so you'll need an adapter to run on a 30mm axle system.

And qwerty's post is why you won't find them stocked in many shops as they'd only make a fiver selling at that price.

It’s only one variant that’s below £100 unfortunately, all the 165mm ones are £125+

Zee are cheap if you want to try 165.  Single ring only though.  I've got some on my grrravel bike to help with knees and toe overlap.

don't know about PF30, guess you can get adapters?

I had this problem recently after getting fed up with smacking the pedals all the time on my Banshee Rune with 175mm cranks.

I went for some used ones to start with incase I didn't like them, I don't know if 165mm 2x cranks just aren't very popular but it took me ages to find some. I got some Saints in the end, they're a bit heavy but it's not like they were going on a lightweight xc bike anyway.

You will need to ditch the PF30 BB and run something you can run a more normal 24mm spindle with to open up some options.

My 2017 Camber (same as a Stumpy) came with 24mm spindle race face cranks in an adapter. I swooped for a set of 165mm XT cranks to compensate for the low BB.

No issues at all with the adaptor, it’s a race face one, never had a squeak or creak out of it.

So, er, I really shoud know but in all my years of biking this is my first PF BB. What do I need to run the XT cranks? Or perhaps the Hope, as I really want a 22T inner as well...

(I've looked but can't see any 165mm Middleburn?)

Oooh actually I can see what I'd need for the Raceface setup... Kind of pricier than I had hoped though! :S

https://wheelsmfg.com/bb-pf30-universal-adapter-for-24mm-spindle-cranks-shimano-fsa-etc.html

or adapt the shell to threaded with a FSA BB30 threaded adapter and use an external threaded 24mm BB with your 24mm cranks.

bookmarked for interest -- trying to avoid pedal strikes, shock of going from 90s geometry to newer bike is taking a while to come to terms with.      ping me if you're still selling @chakaping
