So rummaging through the spares box I realised I have some Ashima(?) rotors 160/140 spare.
I think I bought them for a WW build about 5 years ago but don't actually remember what they were like or if I used them.
I'm building up a SS XC "race" bike and thought about using them.
Usually I run 180/160 or 160/160.
Is 160/140 taking things too far? It is very flat around here!
I'm heavier than you and ran 180/140 Hope mini (originals) on my P7 that I got rid of 4 years ago. I live in Leeds and it's quite hilly in places and I never had any problems. As long as your brakes are set up properly you should be fine.
I had some Ashima rotors back in the day - they were terrible. Poor braking power and bendy.
I’m 90kg and tried 160mm rotors on my lighter build bike and it was nowhere near enough. 180mm minimum for me but I don’t ride XC so you may get away with it
What brakes / pads you running with them?
Hope seem to like being worked hard (relatively speaking heavier riders & smaller rotors) than others.
I’d try it and see.
Report back. We will assume silence means you died.
I'd be more worried about the fact they were ashima than the size. Assuming they are the ashima lightweight jobs mine had so little metal in that anything that could be described as a descent caused the brakes to overheat causing levers to pull all the way to the bar. Never happened with any avid or Shimano rotor I've also used.
Last pace you want to save weight is on rotors (floating not included)
less metal you have on the actual disc area will aid over heating and cause fade.
just banged 180s on my gravel bike due to being ‘ahem,a bit’ heavier than you and nature of fast road descents is to drag the brake as apposed to stop/start on my mtb.
difference in performance is notable
Your weight says you're not a racing snake so......get some proper brakes and rotors - made of metal, not cheese and in bigger diameter.
Cost of rotors v not stopping etc.....no brainer, don't you think?
Will be selling some Formula R1s soon......
Never had an issue with Quaxar Axims.
Is it even worth an adapter for the 140? Assuming the XC has a 160mm mount?
I wouldn't even put those disc on my kids bike let alone an adult.
