My mate has turned up with a bike with 15mm through axle. The lever turns but the axle doesn't. If you keep turning it comes off. It's threaded into the axle.
I'm have qr bikes so don't really know what to do.
Any help appreciated. How do I take the axle off?

What forks are they? There are different types of TA that work in different ways!

Some you just turn, others like the pesky Maxle Lite you have to locate in a notch, others like Suntour work by what appears to be a combination of luck and magic.

It's the rear axle

Sure it’s not 12mm? What frame is it?

It's a Shimano SM-AX65

Have you got a pic of it? Google is full of stuff that says it’s a 142x12 axle, but when you read into it, the spec says QR 🙄

This?

It should just unscrew after lifting the lever. Are you holding the Bolt opposite the lever whilst turning it?

The lever bit comes off but the smaller stays in the hub.

Hmm, I’m at a loss then, it should just unscrew out of the driveside nut, once you release the lever.

This is from the shimano website:

If the QR head unthreads itself from the axle (which is one of those "shouldn't happen" things), I think you should be able to pull the axle together with the nut from the other side, once you remove the retaining Allen bolt (silver one). Then you can presumably use other methods to part/unseize the axle and the nut.

That star shaped nut on the drive side is held by a little lug (the silver one) - remove the lug and you'll be able to unscrew the star nut, then the axle will pull out from the non-drive side.
You'll need a new axle I reckon.
