I've just got myself a pair of superstar DHX wheels with 142x12 rear hub. I'm not 100% on what rear axle type i can use but am I right in thinking that the shimano SM-AX axle ( http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Shimano-SM-AX65-Axle-for-E-Thru_61975.htm?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=AdwordsProductAds&utm_campaign=Adwords&gclid=CKbJr_n7l78CFSoCwwod_48A3g )

Will be compatible with the hub?

I take it your bike accepts 142x12?

Not sure if that axle should be OK, but if you find out it is then you can get that axle from Evans for £17 by signing up to their newsletter and claiming a fiver off your basket using the code they send you (original price is £21ish).

Cheers

My frame is a DMR Bolt which now has 142x12 dropouts on it. Just having difficulty finding out what axle is compatible.

Thanks for the saving tip though!

You need to work out what pitch thread you have in the frame, that'll tell you what axle you want.

Check if the drive side drop out has threads or just just a smooth hole.

If just a smooth hole that Shimano axle will work fine. Otherwise you'll need to check the thread pitch etc ..

My Bandit has a modular drop out with an end cap with threads, which the axle threads into. I can remove this end cap leaving just a drop out with a smooth hole that I can put any 12mm axle through and any 12mm bolt to hold it together.

Ahh thanks jairaj. I haven't yet recieved the frame so not sure what the drop outs are like but i think they are just threadless holes for the axle to slide straight through. I'll hold fire and wait until the frame/dropouts arrive.

As above, originally it was fairly simple when Syntace invented the standard. Now everyone is doing their version on the standard. Assuming it's due to patents, but it seems they're all slightly different dropout designs. If you've yet to receive the frame, it might come with the axle, maybe it won't, especially if it's a 2nd hand frame. Might be worth starting a thread asking the same question with the make and model of frame in the title.

DMR Swopouts from this I am guessing the dropout on your frame is the "Maxle Bosses", so a Rockshox Maxle will work? That's my thinking.

From the link you gave:

Maxle Bosses
ONLY FOR USE WITH 12MM BOLT THRU SWOPOUT. These bosses bolt onto the 12mm Swopout allowing you to run a lighter and more user friendly Rockshox Maxle quick release axle with your DMR/Kinesis frame.

This sounds like a similar thing to my Bandit drop outs. You need the 12mm bolt thru drop out in the first place and the Maxle Bosses allows you to use a Rockshox Maxle with the plain 12mm drop out.

So chances are the frame will have either just plain 12mm holes so you can use the cheaper Shimano axle. Or if the drop outs are threaded then the threads can be removed revealing the simple 12mm drop out.
