My Salsa can have different rear dropout plates - it currently has 135mm QR which is fine, I don't really care, but it can also have 142mm 12mm through axle. So, if I were to get new wheels, is it worth getting 142x12? Is likely to be more future proof? Or is it already old hat and will all MTBs be boost in the future?

What wheels do you have as 135 and 142 hub shells are the same.
You can often convert to 142 x10/x12
If you need new wheels, then yes, 142 thru is better than 135.
But as far as moving to your next bike..boost will more likely be the standard

I am thinking that I will get decent wheels at some point - the ones I have are old and sub-optimal. So when I eventually upgrade I will get 142 I suppose. In theory I can upgrade 142 to boost with spacers and a disc spacer if needed, no? Hubs might end up being Hope.

Other questions to ask are how much do you value this bike and intend to keep riding it and are all your QR axles bent?

you can probably get some decent cheap 2nd hand hope 142's (or 135's that can be converted)

I noticed my bike was stiffer with less flex going from qr to 142. I wouldn't go back.

142 is old. 148 is current?

Hmm ok. So not much difference either way.
