Could anyone recommend a decent, affordable rear wheel for a trail hardtail? Needs to fit a Sunrace 11speed cassette. Budget about £120. Seen some DT Swiss spline on ebay but the rims are quite narrow. Don't need anything too wide as max tyre clearance for rear wheel is 2.4."

There are some Shimano MT500 but they are 28 spoke, guessing this won't be great on an off road bike?

All mine have been fine (28 spokes, no experience with that wheelset)

What diameter/width rim do you need?

Perhaps I'm over thinking the rim diameter as I'm unlikely to run anything over 2.3 but not sure about the spokes. Pretty much every trail bike seem to have 32 spokes.

I’ve been trying to get hold of a 24 spoke rim for my (enduro) bike. Just can’t get em, despite SRAM making them as an OEM wheelset only a handful of years ago (SRAM Rail). Basically replacement rims are only ever 32 or v occasionally 28. XC race rims are available in 24 spoke. 28 spoke you will find a small handful of lightweight XC / ‘trail’ rims.

That said, the 24 spoke rim was fine from a strength point of view. YMMV.

I have 28 but didn't even realise till i accidentally brought a 28 hole hub to build a new wheel and got concerned only to find out that was what I already had. Has been used on a hardtail on trails and also loaded up for bikepacking so has had some abuse and is still true to within 0.5mm. That is dt swiss spline. Very impressed but maybe a little heavy.
