My gx Eagle chain keeps snapping. However, it's not on the pins, but on the plates themselves. It's now happened 4 times where the plates are cracking and breaking, causing the chain to bend sideways and jamming in the rear mech. Is this a known occurance, is there a reason for this happening or is it a defective chain?
I've not had any problems with my 2 GX eagle chains so far. It does sounds like it could be a defective chain.
I had this once under a full Sprint.
I put it down to me being MEGA (I am of course joking).
But Yeh, I've had it. Flimsy things
Ol, check if you have the new type jockey wheels or the old ones. That might actually be breaking the chain as it jams in the cage!
I'll go get a pic of the new type jockeys.....

The one on the left has a ridge all around it as you can see. That's the new design jockey. Only one of the jockeys has this, the other does not. It stops the chain getting sucked between the teeth and the cage. Potentially breaking the mech/chain etc.
If you have the new jockeys....then I'm not sure what to recommend other than a different brand chain?
This is what is happening to the chain. Could jockey wheels do this?
I'm not certain but there was a big thread on the gx eagle on here where mechs/ chains are getting trashed due to the old style wheels seizing up and the chain riding over the teeth and jamming into the cage.
It could well be related. I didn't have the problem as I got the new jockeys on my mech.
Someone will be along I'm sure that can give you a more definite idea.👍
Fills me with dread for buying a new bike
I've had the first of my GX Eagle chains break as you describe. I also have the new jockey wheels and on the whole, they haven't been an issue until the other day, I felt the chain jamming. I immediately stopped and found it was jumping off the jockey, probably because they were thick with mud. I don't think the snapping chain plates are necessarily all down to the jockey wheel issue. Just be careful and keep the system as clean as possible. It's early innovation, therefore we should all expect a certain degree of gremlins before it's perfect. The efficiency of the system still outweighs the bugs for me.
Have you been using the same chain - I'd chuck it after the first broken link. Possibly defective, but the stress of the break could damage other links.
Lastnight I fetched my eagle chain off to give it a good clean. Once cleaned up and dried, virtually one in three outer plates are cracked, ready to snap!!
Chain has done less than 500 miles, mostly downhill too! Really shocked to see it so poor to be honest.
Going to try and get in contact with sram.
Give your eagle chains a check guys, could save smashed knees or an OTB crash.
Blimey, I will!👍
Yup ! Me too, exactly as pictures above. Bought a new chain but not fitted yet as the bike lives at my parents house and I’m 6,000 miles away
I've read elsewhere it'll actually work with an 11speed chain. Anyone on here tried it?
No reason why a 12 speed chain should be weaker than an 11 speed one. the plate thickness is the same and that is where the tension is taken. The 12 speed chain has slightly narrower pins and rollers, which actually makes them a bit stiffer/stronger. Must be something else or maybe you are superhuman afterall!
I can see you can now buy KMC 12 speed chains, which I will be doing along with some uberbike Jockey wheels for my GX mech. When it works it’s great but I find trying to remove all the SRAM elements from MTB SRAM groupset the safest bet. 😂
The efficiency of the system still outweighs the bugs for me.
Is it measurably more efficient than say a M8000 XT system ?
