Been getting a bit of creaking and pinging from the chain recently. Did the old "measure 12 half links" routine and got 12" 3/16ths.

So new chain required apparently (I could probably have guessed that from the fact all the bushings spin and rattle) but do I need a new cassette too?

Some sources say definitely - others say not really. It doesn't look tooo shark-toothed yet, but there are a few burrs developing on it.

Buy a new chain, if it works, you don't. If it doesn't, you do.

Although you probably do.

Hmm.. fair enough.

It's my commuter so I'm not overly keen to spend money putting anything shiny and new on it before winter.

Nah it is utter boobbins IME

My two worst

& spped chain using 8 sped shifters and new 9 sped crank - chain stretched beyond words - worked fine [ indexing was bit iffy in the middle]

Road bike 10 thousand miles + on original everything
tested it recently as I think all this change drive train is bobbins [ and i am bit sad 😳 ] and fine with a new chain, fine with a new cassette using the old chain - did not bother changing the front rings but I was tempted to try it with new rings but just assumed it would be fine

No one has ever [s]managed[/s] bothered* to produce any research when I challenge them to on threads like this.

* i am sure the maufacturers have

Ah Singletrack - always five sides to any story 😀

Okay sounds like I might as well buy a new chain but run the old one till the skipping gets bad.
