I searched for answers for this but couldn't find anything recent. As the title goes, will a SLX 12 speed chainring work in an otherwise existing 11 speed setup? I can't see why it won't.

Asking because a mate needs a new crank and there are good deals from Merlin on Shimano SLX that come with the 12 speed chainring. Nowhere has his current raceface crank in stock and Shimano HT2 is a better system in my opinion.

Thanks for your help.

It'll work, but it might run like a sack of shit, the shimano 12 speed rings are profiled to run with their 12 speed chains

Yes. Am running exactly this on my eBike after quickly wearing out the Shimano 12 speed cassette and wanting a cheaper future if I have to change the cassette every 1k km. I’ve removed the 12speed shifter, derailleur and cassette and replaced with much, much cheaper SLX 11 speed and using a new SRAM 11 speed chain which I’ve used on Shimano 11 speed without issue before. Although, like you, I couldn’t find anyone who had done this I decided to just try leaving the 12 speed chainring on as it’s not worn and it’s been absolutely trouble free.
