Embarrasing ineptitude on my part...

...where does the metal spacer go when adding a 10 speed cassette to an 11 speed hub? 😳

Am I right in assuming it goes on the freehub before the cassette?

Yes, where else could it go?

If it's a Shimano hub you will need the 10 speed spacer as well as the 11 speed one.

Er....

So I have AC MTB race 29's. They came with two spacers, one is black and thin, the other silver an thicker. I put the silver one on, then took the cassette straight off my old 10'speed wheels and on, on top of the spacer. Ac's website says this:

For Campagnolo 11 speed cassettes you must put the 0.5 mm cassette spacer on the cassette body prior to installing the cassette. For Shimano 10 speed, you need to use this spacer in conjunction with the Shimano 1.5 mm spacer provided with all 10 speed cassettes. The black American Classic 0.5mm cassette spacer goes on first. For Campagnolo 10 and Shimano 9 speed, you only need to use this spacer if the chain touches the spokes when in the easiest gear or once you have tightened the cassette cogs with the lock ring there is still some movement in the cogs.

There was no spacer attached to the cassette?

What should I have done?

The shimano spacer is like a tiny sheet metal washer. There's every chance it's still on your old freehub.

Generally you would need the 1.85mm spacer that is supplied with the hub and the 1mm spacer that is supplied with the cassette.

In reality, if the cassette is on and tight, and the chain doesn't contact the spokes you are good to go!

I may have to go with PJ266 on this. There is no spacer on the old free hub - becuase it's a 10speed hub?

The silver spacer is 1.8mm. The black one is 0.5 mm. I've used the silver one only, and the cassette is tight, the chain doesn't hit the spokes, and all the changes are good.

All ok then I guess although im 0.2mm short on spacers....

In with every 10sp shimano cassette is a thin washer that goes between free hub and cassette. Normally it's the one forgotten about. It's less than a mm thick

I looked really hard - it wasn't on the original free hub or stuck to the cassette. As I said, there is one that size that at came with the new wheels. Note I didn't by the cassette it came OEM with the bike.

Not correct. Tiagra 4600 10spd cassettes don't use the spacer.

Mtb 10spd cassettes don't use the 1mm spacer either.

The problem is that AC is quoting roadie specs. Roadie 9spd is different than 10, and different again to 11 in terms of cassette width. 9 is 1.0mm wider than 10 (hence the spacer) and 1.85 less than 11. MTB on the other hand is the same for 9 as 10, meaning that you need a different spacer set up. As you have discovered, the 1.85 is all you need for MTB 10 > 11... don't get me started on supplying 11spd free hubs on MTB wheels though!
