Apologies if this has been asked before.
Have a Shimano 11 speed chain, don't want to join with the Shimano one time use connecting pin.
Can I use a sram or kick 11 speed link instead?
Need to get the chain off for proper cleaning and lubing.
Can I use a sram or kick 11 speed link instead?
Yes, although both the Sram and KMC 11spd links are designed to be single use only.
Thanks, but been re using all manufacturers links for ages without any issues.
I'm using the YBN 11 speed from Merlin with no problems.
I've had a 10 speed kmc quick link on mine for the last year.. Seems fine
Cheers all
I believe the single use marking is misleading and actually means use for this chain only so you're not meant to re-use the quick link on another chain. I might be wrong.
I've detached my quick/power links (SRAM 11 speed chains on Shimano 10/11s drive trains) for crank / bb / rear mech maintenance and re-attached them many a time with no issues. Using some Park link pliers.
I carry a spare quick link with me in my pack just in case and my multi-tool has a chain splitter. Never needed to use one when out though - touch wood. The day I don't take one... 😉
Same. I always remove chains (9, 10 AND 11 speeds) when bike cleaning, and swap old split links to new chains (so I have 'free' spare links). No issues. Use the BBB pliers
as above, they can be reused despite not being 'recommended'. Or next time you pass a Decathlon, they do own brand ones (made by KMC by all accounts) so you can have spares.
In a pinch you can use a lower speed link on a higher speed chain - eg a 10spd or 9spd on an 11, a 9spd on a 10, etc. For that reason i also carry a couple of spare 9's in my pack, left over from when 9 speed was state of the art, and where they'll fit pretty much any chain anyone will be riding they've saved rides for me and others over the years. They are a bit wider and might 'tick' a bit over the cassette but compared to walking.....
And also worth stashing a spare one to fit your bike somewhere - on my road bikes they're in coin bags and then shoved up the inside of my seatposts, have heard of others doing the same inside the hollow axle of a HT2 crank.... then you're never without.
