Would anyone have thoughts or experience on these:-
http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/icon-ultra-11speed-rear-hub.htm
Or any other other recommendations ?
Those look remarkably like "bitex" hubs who a fair few companies use and rebrand..
I've a set on my chinese carbon wheels and only had to replace rear bearings after 2000 miles 🙂
Thanks - similar to Novatech then?
do you find the rear at all flexy ?
Never used novatech but know loads who do without issue ... Never noticed any unwanted flex but I'm 65kg
Would have thought that the rims and spoke configuration would have a greater bearing on how "flexy" the wheels are rather than the hubs?
(Novatec hub user/builder here too).
Edit: lighter (210g) option from the US comes in under £100 if you make the broad assumption that customs will charge you about £27 for the privilege of bringing them into the country 🙂 The bloke at BHS is very helpful on email, I've bought from him. Whether you can get "the same" hub over here I don't know...
Yup those look like bitex too ..

They do a super light version too around 190g

Look famliar?

Aye, I have built some (unnecessarily light, frankly) wheels with them...
Thanks guys, much appreciated - will get a look at those
Order just placed with BHS so let you know how it goes - thanks again
Munkster how did the 190g hub wheel build come out ? Looking at a weenie build for a possible project ? What rims would you recommend for light build but reliable ?
Cheers
I built them with the 60g front hub from BHS onto Kinlins XR19W (also from BHS) using DT Rev spokes all round bar Comps on the DS rear. Alu nips 24/28 so not short of spokes. Came in about 1360g IIRC. Done several 000s of k's on them. Starting to notice the rear does flex very slightly on climbs but thus only really evident at the moment due to having very closely fitting mudguards perhaps?
People swear by Archetypes (and they are v nice to build with) but light (cf those Kinlins frinstance) they are not...
DT 240?
eBay item 331466706082
I bought one from this seller, arrived in 4 days, sold the campag freehub to offset the shimano one
Cheers pretty light build .. My far sports 38mm clinchers with rar 13(bitex) are 1340g actual .. So not bad in comparison
Plus one - that's close to what I'm doing
LB 35mm clincher rim with Goldtec front hub that I had in the spare box & the BHS rear
@Munkster - what would be your spoke recommendation? for a 20/24 build if I was looking to get them in and around the 1400g mark ?

Cor, I'm no expert mate. But since you ask, I am tending to go with Sapim spokes these days and assuming you don't have a spare kidney to sell (and therefore not going with CX Rays) my next build is Lasers all round and D-Lites on the rear DS. I was very tempted to go D-Lites all round since they aren't that much heavier to be honest but are evidently that little bit fatter. Presume at 20/24 you'd be building radial front and 2x rear? Whether that will come in around the 1400g mark is question you need to ask Excel I reckon 😉
Mine are sapim cx Ray spokes 20/24 hubs .. Can't remember rim weight on mine off top of my head but reckon you'll achieve 1400g maybe less
sounds good
what are the advantages (if any) of radial over 2x on the front ?

Hubs don't flex.
Spokes - having sold and built many brands, my experience is that the decent brands are all fine. CX rays may have infinite fatigue life but Revs are fine. What to choose depends on rim, spoke count, your weight and riding style. I put reliability over saving 100gm or whatever which is often the max you'll save over 32 x 16/14 gauge spokes.
There'll be loads of web stuff about the relative merits but for me I just think it looks nicer 🙂 there is the small consideration of whether hubs have enough flange material to cope but I can't answer that one!
So for a lightish but strong build for me (weight 10st) - in and around the 1400g mark 20/24 : -
LB 35U clincher rims (approx 420g ea)
Goldtec front hub - 90g
BHS rear - 210g
Sapim Lasers - 44 No. - approx 190g
Brass nipples - 44 No. - 44g
Skewers - say - 100g
so approx 1474g
look ok ?
Some would advise (and I would take that advice personally) to have a heftier spoke on the DS but others would say it was fine...
Quoted wheel weights normally without skewers.
D-light on the DS then?
That's what I'm doing but like I say I've seen others saying Lasers (or Revs) would be fine. Probably more experienced/pro builders than me no doubt!
Personally I'd go higher spoke count of lighter spoke if you have any concerns.
I still regret selling my PX tub rims, 260gm! I panicked about punctures and repairs.
EDIT I am someone who spent £30 ona 105 rr hub as it's only 100gm heavier than those above, will last forever, and doesn't shed metal at the sight of a cheap cassette!
Hi Al,
makes sense but unfortunately my rims are already here so have to stick with what I got - I was looking for some DA or Ultegra 24 hole hubs but can't find any in that count
You can defo get DA in 24 hole not Ultegra though.
