I’m looking at a new frame and will need new cranks to go with it.
Will a 12 speed XT chainring play nicely with SRAM 11 speed and 12 speed chains?
The bike may be getting built up with 11 speed for now with a view to upgrading to 12 speed with parts from my current Mtb.
Right.... the Shimano 12 speed chain requires narrower chainring teeth... and so the Shimano 12 speed chainring has narrower (and taller) teeth. What does that mean? You can use just about any chainring with your 11 speed kit. The problems only start once you go full 12 speed and you start using 12 speed chains. So, yes, you can use that 12 speed XT chainring with your old kit... but, it'll probably end up worn enough through that use to require replacing when you do decide to add a 12 speed cassette and chain later. When you do go full 12 speed... that's the point where you need to be extra careful with chains and chainring working together.
Thanks for that.
I think I might just jump straight in to the 12 speed then, it’s probably cheaper in the long run.
