I'm putting together a bike out of spare parts for a friend. I have an 10sp 11-42T Shimano HG500 cassette and an 10sp X7 sram shifter. Which rear mech do I need? I've read a few problems with the top jockey hitting the largest cog.

Also trying convert a rear wheel from 142x12 to 135x10. It's a DT Swiss 142x12, model unknown as it came with my 2012 Scott Genius LT, I want to make it 135x10. I've read its just the end caps and 10mm QR I need? If someone could confirm this that would be great. Price of the end caps seem a bit steep at £30

I used a cheap eBay goat link copy to get an X5 mech to work on my lads bike.

As you have a Sram shifter you'll need a Sram mech. I'm not too familiar as all my 1x10 conversions are with Shimano. To get it to shift onto the big gear you at least need to tighten the b-tension screw, or replace it with a longer one, you will get better shifting by adding a goat link or cheap copy (as above).

As for the wheel, you will need an adaptor. If we are talking 26" wheels then I suspect it will be cheaper to buy a new, 2nd hand, wheel than buy an adaptor kit. If you are anywhere near Bristol I'd happily swap you a 135×10 for a 142×12.
