New medium cage Shimano XT 10spd rear mech turned up in the post this morning, and well. Doesn't seem a whole lot shorter cage than a long cage one!

This is for single ring use only, so I'd be happy going shorter... But what are the options? Can't see anything except a long cage in SLX, XT there only appears to be medium and long, XTR??? I suppose SRAM probably do something, but I'm not a fan of SRAM shifters sadly...

WGAS? I use a GS cage (medium) XTR with a single ring, it's fine. They don't do any 10 speed SS cage mechs AFAIK.

I have found the cheapest way to get a short cage mech is to run a road one! I've been running a Tiagra (£22 new) mech on my 1x9 for 18 months now, upgraded the jockey wheels to some more durable ones when the orignals wore out and it's still working very well. It's had a hard life too.

So if I were going 1x10 I reckon a 105 or Ultegra one would work well, they also stay more out of the way than a short cage mtb mech

Different cable pull on the road stuff, it's the same as 9 speed MTB.

WGAS??? - "Who Gives A ...." ???

Anyway, it's not purely about the chain tension is it, further from the ground the cage of the mech is the less likely it is to clout anything... Though that may just be clutching at straws!

Shorter the cage, the neater it looks too.

coopersport1, what njee said, sadly 10spd Shimano MTB mechs pull a totally different amount of cable to anything that has gone before. 10spd Shimano roadie mechs work with anything 8/9/10spd MTB or road from Shimano, but the reason why the 10spd MTB stuff works so well IMO (the cable pull) makes it incompatible with anything that has gone before.

Oh well lucky my 1x9 isn't 1x10 then! I always thought the amount it shifted was dictated by the shifter not the mech so as long as shifter was 10speed the mech would position correctly. Hey ho shows how much I know 😉

Dammit! I've got a GS XT winging its way to me right right now for this:

further from the ground the cage of the mech is the less likely it is to clout anything

reason.

Technically I kind of needed a new one anyway after beating my SLX to death on a rock, but I'd hoped it would make a difference paying for shorter-cage XT.

When does Saint go 10-speed?
