Ultegra set up, wants lower gears. Will a 10sp XT mech work with 10sp STI units?
I've got a feeling it won't.....

Lindarets have an adaptor.

I have a fitted but unused Lindarets tanpan for sale (email in profile if your interested, £25 posted, and saves you having to pay 15 quid more in import duty's) just not got around to putting it on the forsale section - it didn't fit with the cable routing on my bamboo bike.

I'm using a tanpan, works really well. You might need to pair with a road link or goat link.

Ghostlymachine- Does the 9sp mech really work or is that just a rumour? 🙂
I'd already heard of that but couldn't confirm it.

9 speed MTB mech works fine.

No, it works perfectly.

Only time i've had issues was running a long cage mtb mech on a straight through road cassette. By the time you get to the 21/23 sprocket there is enough clearance between the top jockey and the cassette that the side flex in the chain is enough to cause shifting to get a bit vague.

But if you are doing it for more range, bigger cassette. It'll work as well as a road mech. If not better.

Use a 9spd mech as others have said.

9 speed road or 9 speed MTB mech work perfectly, it's all the same actuation ratio.

This is a handy reference for all this stuff

PS I know people using 9 speed mech 10 speed road shifters

I am using a Shimano XTR M972 Shadow Mega 9 mech on my tripster with an XT 11-36 cassette and 10 speed 105 brifters.

Works fine - only problem I had was a strike on the longer cage pushed it past the elbow that keeps the tension.

I was thinking of trying the lindarets though.

Actually Peter, could just get the Lindarets road link and you can use your existing Ultegra mech with a bigger cassette, unless a clutch mech is something you want.

Road link also now available from the UK wolftooth distributor.

I'm running a 9sp XTR mech on my 10sp Ultegra STI (and 10sp XT cassette) CX gears.

Only way I could get the 10sp set-up I wanted with the extra wide range, it's a 12-36 cassette on there.

Works perfectly - in fact the major problem with it has never been the parts but the rather shit internal cable routing which requires very careful setup.

I also changed my jockey wheels to one tooth less than normal...

I've done the road link with a short road mech and ran 11-40. Got the tanpan on for a clutch xt medium mech, better at taking up slack and the clutch is cool for hammering down long descents in Cotswolds/Wales. This is 1x with a 40 up front. Double I think you're up to a 11-36 as a max.

It's not for me, it's for a customer*. I'm keeping it simple.

*Apparently it's not allowed to tell them to take a good long swig from a bottle of Man The **** Up potion.... 😉

I think the lindarets might be the simpler option as availability of the mech will be better, you can run a shorter cage, and no need to change the jockey wheels to get the best shifting.

I think I am going to try it as it turned out to be easy knocking my mech forward with a rock strike (I assume) riding around the devils punchbowl.
