I'm pretty sure if someone asked me this I'd give the "better wheels will make more difference" but I'm looking at his as a long term upgrade strategy

currently looking at 105 5800 and Ultegra 6800 groupsets (or possibly Force 22), 105 is £325 on merlin, Ultegra £500 ish (force £575). I have a set of Khasmins that are 11 speed compatible and as new so my question is to I go Ultegra/Force and run the Khasmins till next year or buy 105 now and spend the savings plus the second hand value of the Khasmins and buy the Ksyrium elites that Merlin have for £325

Anyone have real life experience of the new 105 and Ultegra with regards to feel of the sifters and brakes?

Ultegra a tenner cheaper on ribble (not that it answers your question!)

For my new road build i'll be going 105, but not sure my wheel budget will be as high as yours.

Is this for a "Best" (summer only) bike or an all year rounder?

ultegra and keep your current wheels, upgrade wheels next year when youve got funds, there may be a better offer on anyway.

New 6800 ultegra is very nice. Have it on Planet x pro carbon.

I think the standout for me is how well the brakes work (for a road bike) I think the design of the caliper is different.

Apart from that I don't really notice the group so cant be doing anything wrong.

Only fault was bottom bracket, they have changed to non standard tool size and it only lasted 1000 miles before it started grumbling. Hope stainless fitted now and all running silent.

Hope that helps.

Ultegra now .. new wheels next year.
Gives you all winter to learn how to ride the wheels you got. Saving you smashing the lovely Ksyrium elites around the soon to be wet and wintry roads/lanes.

Well it's early August now, realistically will you have the bits ordered and fitted much before the end of the month? in which case you'll maybe get to start riding it all from early September onwards, if its a "best bike" it's going to spend a fair few months then sat in the shed between the new bits being fitted and what March perhaps? Maybe the odd ride through winter on dry days?

That 5800 Group is a bit of a bargain IMO, I sort of wish I'd held off buying a "Cheap" 5700 group a few weeks ago, as I could have had 5800 for another £25... Bugger! but playing with my mates shiney new 6800 equiped bike the other day, it is rather nice...

Anyway, I'd have the 5800 group, sit on the £175 and keep the khasmin's through winter, keeping an eye out for further Bargain wheelsets and bide my time, There's bound to be some bigger savings on wheelsets during the winter, But I'm a cheapskate...

As you're already drifting that way, I reckon keep the old wheels for now, buy the Ultegra group and enjoy it...

get the Ultegra.
If you want cheap get the 105 and get a 11 speed to 10 speed Spacer

6800 is fantastic. I've changed one of my bikes from 7900 Dura-Ace to 6800 and I'm quite happy to call it an upgrade. 9000 DA is barely any better.

why would I need a spacer when 5800 105 is 11 speed

to be fair I think it's going to be 5800 and as mentioned about keep an eye on the wheel bargains, I reckon 400g on wheels is going to be more noticeable then 400g on groupset. I probably should have stated the bike I've just bought secondhand and it has 6700 at present but with an fsa chainset which has seen better days, my mate wants the 6700 bits for his crosser and this would probably cover the most of the price of the 105.

What frame and group set do you have at the moment? Givan that the kahmsins you have on there at the the moment have had some use, carry on with them to until they are dead, they're not a bad wheelset

Bigyinn - what I meant by learn to ride them is.
Often guys moving from riding a Mtb to a road bike will steam roll their way down the road .. pot holes hold no fear for them.
It's not rocket science, but you do need to ride the best bit of road available if you want to protect your wheels.

well I completely ignored you all and went for 105, no plans to rade in the next 12 months but may try and get back the following year and do some cx in between so the 105 could end up on the cx bike and then go Ultegra or similar next year on the road bike, picked up a cheap set of American Classic sprint 350's all being well so should do the trick for a few sportif rides next year and a planned Irish end to end.

well inpressed with the 5800, shifters feel positive and after a few niggles with the front mech the new action really impressed me. Brakes are a big step up even from older Ultegra

What tyres are you fitting? Do yourself a favour and buy two Veloflex Open Corsas for £52 from Ribble, you will never want another tyre again after you've experienced them.
