Ok been a keyboard warrior only so far and would really appreciate your experience.

I am looking for a £1,000 bike that:

1. is a 29inch
2. the front end is not too low and stretched
3. is light
4. will do mostly long trails, red routes in a calm manner, canal paths

Suggestions really welcome.

Dan

On One Parkwood. That would be my first port of call.

Aye, forgot Boardman

Pinnacle Ramin as well, although not sure how stretched out they may be.

Paul's Cycles, see what they've got in your size for around your budget.

Cotic had a nice Solaris for under £1000 in their sale

+1 for the Boardman 29er. £850 in halfords at the moment plus you can save an extra £85 if you are a member of British cycling.

iv been very happy with my On one parkwood. Bought second hand and served well for some biggish loops in the lakes and a bit of bike packing and general winter bike abuse.
The deore build has been faultless and i notice very little difference between the XT on my other bike.
As others have mentioned the Boardman bikes also offer good VFM.
have you seen the £1000 hardtail review in this months STW magazine? Some other good considerations.

The Whyte in the latest issue looks like a nice bike.

In the spirit of STW, I woul go to Leisure Lakes and pick up the new P7 in the sale.

£200 over budget and the wrong wheel size. I just think they look great.

This and spend the savings on a lighter wheelset, better tyres and wider bars if required.

Or just a dropper.

Totally unbeatable for the money IMO.
