i decided last summer that i would eventually make my long awaited 10 speed upgrade....previously i had been waiting for my 8 speed system to die but it just wouldnt!
anyway i never got round to doing it because the wife had spent the money on the garden instead...so i eventually got round to ordering all the parts last week. everything went on without any issues. i had intended to keep the front mech and shifter form the old set up so i could run it as 2x10, but due to chain line issues the front mech had to go as did the shifter. when i can be bothered i will remove the granny ring.
so then i took the bike to Llandegla for a ride and wow! i was amazed at how good it felt to have an extra 2 gears on the climbs. i previously ran with a 11-32 cassette and now i could feel a big improvement with the new 11-36 cassette. removing the fornt mech and shifter has lightened the bike a bit, albeit by a very few grams but still, i could feel the difference.
i only wish i have done this a lot sooner, i could have saved myself some grief on al the climbs!!
i suppose it serves me right for being such a luddite!!

now...dropper posts...should i or not? hmmmmmmmm....

surely you had 6 gears fewer than previously.... 2x8 vs 1x10...?

the cost, the fact that my 9spd gear is in perfectly good working order (shifters, deraileur), that 10spd doesn't - to my knowledge- come in Rapid Rise guise and that i will still need two rings up front due to the long, steep climbs locally (Alps) means that i'll continue with 9sod for a while longer...

I'm on 3 x 9 and 26" wheels with high rise bars - get me (the bars are wide though 😉 )

i never bothered using the granny ring so even though it has 2x8, i was using it like a 1x8.

TAFKASTR - i'm still on 26" but i'm too short for 29" to work for me and i cant see the point of 650b IMO.

now debating whether to get a dropper or not....

I was expecting it to be quite fragile, after running it for a year, I'm impressed it isn't (fragile) and has lasted quite well. I personally am not so impressed by 1x10 (or the price of 1x11 or a 42 cassette converter) and have dumped it now it worn out, for a 2x10 and my knee's are so much happier for it. Doubt I'd notice now if I ran 2x9 or 2x10 though...

TBH the best improvement has been the shadow + (clutch part), as I've run the front ring into the ground and not seen any sign of chainsuck

Never had a 10 speed mtb (only ever ridden two), as I've gone from 9speed to 1 speed to 11 speed. Or I will have when the new bike arrives in a couple of weeks 🙂

it was a 26t ring and it felt weird especially on the larger cogs on the cassette...so in the end i just stopped using it
i'd taken this ring from one of my other bikes which ran a 11-34 cassette and it worked better on that

Sorry, but I find it hard to believe that you could tell the weight difference.

a dropper is the next thing on my list but my problem is i'm restricted to 27.2mm.
having said that i had the saddle up high on saturday and managed to do the descents at Llandegla with plenty of speed and got some good airtime, and it didn't get in the way....for that reason i'm wondering if i really need one...but i'm sure i'll find a way of convincing myself that i do need one

you're probably right there...
the thing is since last summer the coil/air forks have been swapped for air forks, the coil shock for an an air shock (on the last ride i hadnt put enough air in this and it felt sluggish but now with the correct air pressure is more responsive), i also took off the massive tractor tyres and put some faster rolling tyres on so they're the most likely reasons why the bike is starting to feel a lot lighter

Looked at pimping my ride to 1x10 speed today and the basket total was £223.

cant justify that, unless someone wants my Sram XO shifters and Sram XO rear mech for £200

New frame, very tempted to swap to 10spd and quite tempted to get a oneup and go 1x10, A for the extra lower gears and B so I still have a 1:1 ratio in the big (36) ring. trouble is I have rapid rise on my other bikes (and some 9spd spares too) so it'd involve buying a couple more normal 9spd mechs and dumping all the rapid rise ones.

plus new frame (warranty) ideally needs to replace either my 5" or my 6" FS bike, indecision reigns supreme here at the moment.

A solution in search of a problem...,
hmm, I was cynical too, for average riding 22/32 9spd 11-32 is cool for me, close enough ratios, chainring clearance just high/low enough for most of my riding, but....
22x32 on big hills in the lakes I've been wanting a little lower gear.
On shorter faster rides or where there's some road work I wanted higher, tried 22/36 crankset but I ended up spending a lot of time in the granny ring, an 11-36 block would fix all that.

Plus with the 42t kits you've got the option of 1x10, a 32x11-42 replaces nearly the whole range of the standard 2x9. Still undecided, I'm maybe gonna wait another 6-12months before making the jump, but once my rapid rise mechs are knackered I'll be switching, hopefully 11-42 cassettes will be more readily available then too.

10 unique gears on a wide spread vs 16 with overlap, it's going to be pretty neutral.
