Need a new chainset on the 9 speed road bike. 10 speed seems to be cheaper than 9 speed. How well does it work though? I know some of the 10 speed road kit doesn't work with 10 speed mtb kit. Will the road 10 speed chainset need a new front mech or shims to work with my existing 9x3 shifters?
Thanks.
Apart from being a triple and therefore looking wrong, it'll work fine.

So, if I went for a double, should I use clicks 1 and 2 in the shifter or 2 and 3 in the shifter?
Or not be brow beaten by the internet and stick with the compact triple?
I thought the spacing was a tiny bit narrower on 10 speed chainsets, but thank you chaps.
I went for 1 and 2 and screwed the H screw in almost as far as it goes! Haven't had any difficulties so far.
I got a triple. Can ride up anything !
I think the chainline may be slightly different but probably not enough to make a difference. From a previous thread I seem to remember people reporting improved shifting. Anyway, let me know, I'm in the same boat and faced with new chainset or new groupset if it doesn't work.
I've used 10 speed double chainsets on 9 speed set ups before now with no issues.
It seemed more dependant on taking time to set up the cables correctly and mech alignment, rather than any miniscule differences in chainline or chainring spacing/chain width etc.
