It seems everyone agrees 10 speed shimano stis will work with 9 speed mtb mechs and 10 speed cassettes, but will it work with a campag shifter? Can't find any info online

On an aside, would a Lindarets road link and short cage road mech work better?
Medium and short cage 9 speed mtb mechs are hard to come by and I'd rather have less rattliing about and collecting grass out back.
