I've got an XT 9 speed Hollowtech II chain set. Is it possible to run a 10 speed chain ring successfully if I change the cassette, chain and rear mech of course ? Do I need spacers ?

It'll work no bother, you'll just need shorted chain ring bolts

If it doesn't fit, all that should need doing is a small about if filing, to remove the excess from the chain bolt tabs

M770 9 speed will be fine as it came with the later metal + composite middle ring. The older m760 type will need some fettling for the new style middle chain rings.
