I have a 10 speed drivetrain on a hardtail 29er using an Absoluteblack oval 34t chainring and tried to fit a 11-42 cassette (in place of my 11-36) all works ok apart from in the 2 smaller sprockets the arm where the rear durailer cable attaches just catches the 42t sprocket.
Can i just grind a bit off the arm or will i need a goatlink or similar? Has anyone else tried this or shall i grind it down a mm or 2 and report back as i have some spare time.....

There shouldn't be a problem - I wouldn't grind anything off.
Have you taken the derailleur off? Sounds like the mech is out of position on the hanger.

I got a longer b tension screw off eBay which did the job, was only a few quid.

I'm running a 10 speed SLX mech with 11-42 cassette

I've just set up the exact same. It was very sensitive to b tension. Too much and it wouldn't drop down, to little and it wouldn't shift up. Got it working in the end (after straightening the mech hanger). A quick ride today and it was fine. Given how sensitive it was I'm not totally convinced it'll stay slick so I have a goat link (cheap eBay copy) on the way.

I had exactly the same issue with that XT mech.
Switched from a Saint mech which cleared the cassette fine to XT where the arm clashed.
Sorted with a goatlink (cheap eBay one).

I had the same issue a few years back with an xt, I just ground a little bit down, wasn’t much and never compromised the mech, worked fine after that.

I've seen this happen too and this was the cause. Make sure the tab on the mech is hard up against the tab on the frame before tightening the mech securing bolt.

11-42 mostly works and the usual reason not is mech hangars.
I'd check it's not bent in the 1st instance and look at a cheap "goatlink" if not.

I have re-checked the mech this morning and is fitted corectly although there could be a slight bend in the hanger. Looking more closely and seeing others have had the same problem i think i will grind some off. Its only a catches a fraction on the hooked end of the arm where the cable attaches and appears to be excess material to make a shape to the end of the mech. https://images.app.goo.gl/Za91QkguUmYKPrqG6 its the silver arm in the pic (not my pic)

You shouldn't need to grind anything off - I have the exact same set up and it works great. Didn't even need a longer B screw.

I had the same on a previous bike. I filed off a bit of metal from the hanger, on the shelf that the b-screw sits against. This allowed the mech to rotate counter clockwise a bit further and the arm cleared the bigger sprockets.

How come this works for some but not for others using the same set up?

Because some people have bent mech hangers, some don't? Maybe a bit of variance in frames too, but mostly the first. My hanger was only out a tiny a bit but it really wouldn't work until I straightened it.
