I've held out this long, but after destroying a rear mech in Scotland a few weeks ago I need to make the jump from 9 my much loved 9 speed rapid rise.

Do I jump straight to 11 speed (I have been happily riding 1 x 9 for a few years now) or just go to 10 speed?

I've been an XT convert ever since STX RC was discontinued, but I've heard good things about Zee and the 1 x 10 group set for £124.90 on Chain reaction seems pretty good value, but XT is only £20 more... I like the fact that the Zee mech is nice and short, I used to get a lot of chain slap from my old mech.

Cheapest I can get 11 speed for is £300! Will I need new wheels as well?

Any thoughts from the collective?

Dom

SRAM biggest range, need an XD Freehub, depending on your wheel might be cheap or might not work.
Shimano 11sp limited range same as 10sp with expander.

Personally if you want 11-40/42 on a budget get 10sp and expand it.
If you want a big range 10-42 then go SRAM.
Don't underestimate the difference between 10 & 11

A new 10sp XT cassette and expander ring is more expensive than a new 11sp XT cassette, is it not?

11 Speed XT with the 44 tooth extender.

No need for the 10 cog sram then as you can just run a taller chainring, the 10 tooth cog comes with its own set of problems (chainstay clearance and supposedly some other weird issues that some people/shimano complain about)

You will need new wheels for 11 speed sram but not 11 speed xt.

Depending on your wheels you may not need new wheels just a new xd compatible freehub bit...
