What do I need to do to go from 3x9 to 1x9? Just take the other chain rings off, leave the mech with stops screwed in and no shifter or do I need to get guides/special chain rings etc?

You're on the money. You'll need to buy a little pack of stubby chainring bolts to attach the single ring to the cranks (eg E13 ones on crc for about £12) and then yes you can use your front mech as a chain guide.

I think eventually you'll be better off getting a dedicated guide etc, but to try before you buy, fine.

Yup, just that. I adjusted the front mech limit screws and dropped it a little on the frame so as the chain didn't rub on any of the rear sprockets, seems to hold the chain on well to.

Try your LBS for the shorter Chainring bolts, mine were £5

It's also recommended (not necessary) to shorten the chain.

Have fun!

Hadn't considered the chainring bolts, what about rear much length? - shorter along with shorter chain?

Be fit, or ride in flat places?
