The guy that i commute in with has a Speccy Tricross and has got a bit faster so i'm now struggling in places to keep up on my SS roadrat - can't spin wheels fast enough using 44-17. Just been reading the 1 x 9 thread but think the bashguard, chainguide, chain watchers all look a bit gash and I don't really need 9 mtb spread gears. Wondering if I could run a cut down 9 speed cassette with spacers to make a 5 speed? Presumably with less deviation to the chainline I wouldn't need to worry about it falling off so much.
Any thoughts? Anyone do it?
Just thought - could I set limit screws far enough in to stop mech from overshifting at each end or is there not enough adjustment?
use a 9 speed road casset if you dont need the spread of gears or just dont use the gears you dont need simples.
If you must chop one up and the limit screw isnt long enough just put a longer screw in
get an alfine - Roadrats love them.
put spacers on and go back to 7 speed?
Yup you can, a few 4x riders use SS hubs (like hope trials) and 4/5 gears on the back, Gives you a stronger back wheel as its not dished.
Setting the limit screws would be fine, Pauls components make a bracket to fit road TT gear shifters and use them like thumb shifters. You could run these in friction mode and not worry about indexing.
