I'd like to go 1 x 11 but I'm keen to hang on to my cranks. Is it a simple job of buying an Uno spider and fitting a NW ring (accepting I'll also buy a new Shadow derailleur as well) and ensuring the chainline stays at 50mm?

Cheers

I think I'd get a top chain guide and use your normal rings

Do you currently have a 104 BCD 3x spider?

If so, just get a NW ring and shadow+ mech. Fit the ring to the middle ring position using some single ring bolts from ID.

20 quid for the ring with BLACKWEB25

Yes, but look at an Absolute Black oval ring too - and shifter/cassette.

Nah, don't do that, top guides are way less effective than a narrow/wide ring and cost about the same (or sometimes much more).

Thanks for all the advice. All noted about fitting the NW ring on the middle position of my current set up but if I'm honest the Uno spider is entirely for cosmetic reasons.

I tried riding without a top guide (with narrow wide & clutch mech (x01)), lost the chain. Fitted a top guide after that, I'd take the small weight penalty (one up chain guide) for guaranteed chain retention, rather than a trip over the bars

Aye, there's definitely a case for narrow/wide + chain device for those rare drops (I have a titchy top guide on the big bike sometimes after losing a chain in a race stage, for the first time in ages- annoying). But the narrow/wide is still the important part there, the chainguide is just braces on the belt.

No idea what Clobber's on about though.

I think you want the 'single' spider. The UNO is a combined spider/single ring which isn't narrow wide.

Just trying to work out if you were being serious in saying that a NW ring is more effective than a chain guide?
