Hi folks just wondering how much noise (if any) you experience in the lower gears of your 1 by set ups?
My sram x01 is making a noise not dissimilar to front mech rub/grinding even if only a little bit dirty, particularly when under pressure on a steep climb.
Don't think anything should be worn yet as only done about 4 to 5 hundred miles.
Having read that eagle is quieter I wonder if this is the noise that has been quietened - hopefully not as it does not seem right to me...

Hmm, there is a bit of noise to my XT 1x11 set-up. Frankly the chainline at either end of the cassette looks bloody horrible on the stand, I'm amazed it works at all.

Just as a heads up I'd give your chain a quick check if not already done so, both of my 1 x 11 xt setups have needed new chains within 500 miles which surprised me

Double check your derailleur hanger using a proper tool. It could be that.

Check your chain religiously with 11spd!

I've seen 11spd setups need a new chain (as in gone past 0.75% wear) in under 300 miles before. For the price of a chain (cheap as chips) would you risk it wearing out the (very expensive) cassette?

Buy cheap chains in bulk, replace often. More so when you're running 11 or even 12 speed and expensive cassettes!

Cheers for the replies thinking it might be the chain as I have done about 500 miles (doh)

My SRAM cassette (some sort of middle range deal, I forget which, 1180?) seems a bit noisy, in a sort of echoey/tinny way- I think just because there's very little metal in it so it tings and pings where a more solid cassette wouldn't do anything. Doesn't seem problematic though.

Headline reads
1 x 11 has extreme chainline and wears out chains

Shocking! I mean.... I am just shocked 😯

Check chains with a tool not miles, depends on what you did in those miles.

1100 miles on an XT 11sp chain and I've just changed it as it was on 80% wear.

All 3 of my set-ups, based around sram and rotor q-rings sound terrible unless lubed very frequently. I think it's the thick thin teeth.

It's the one thing I don't like about 1x11.

Mine was also ridiculously loud when in the lower gears and a bit of mud, using the 42t was just a joke. It was the front ring causing the noise for me due to wear from the extreme angle. It never dropped a chain but I replaced it (with a £10-£15 sram steel) and the noise went, that was 500 miles ago. Just about to replace the chain as it has hit 0.75%, cassette still looks great, 1000 miles total.

I only got about 300 miles out of my original ring until it started making this noise. What you get for using low gears with the dodgy chain line.....(never dropped though to be fair as mentioned above)

Chain line. I push the chainring in a few mm, because on balance, that's the gears I spend most of my time in. Seems to help a lot.
