Hi folks just converted my super x cross bike to 1 x, 40t hope ring and 11- 42 cassette, apex shifters and rear mech. Only removed one link from 114 sram red chain and it seems about right but how do you know.... set up loads of 2 and 3x over the years but first venture into single ring territory 🙄

I had this problem as all the formula I could find were for multiple chain rings. In the end I just moved the mech into largest rear cog and stuck the on at a length that seemed not too stretch the mech to it's full extent. It's been fine.

Get it so the mech is at about 45deg to the chainstay when in the lowest gear.

The mech body Steve or the cage with the two pulleys?

The whole thing so end to end it kind of forms a 45deg angle overall

I've always gone with threading the chain around chainring and biggest cog (but not through the derailleur), allowing extra chain until I get to the next inner link then removing two links. This leaves the chain with an inner link at either end that get connected with the quick/master link.

Big-big plus two links is pretty failsafe. You definitely don't want it any shorter than that. Why would you want it any longer?

Whoops! Made a mistake in my last post, should have been "add two links" not remove. Doh!
