Thinking of changing the gearing on my new Giant XTC Advanced in order to run a 1 x 10 setup instead of the stock 2 x 10. Is it just a case of a high/wide chainring (or whatever they're called) or am i better off just buying new cranks ?? Ta
As long as the Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) matches between cranks and chainring (both SLX and almost all narrow/wide chainrings are 104mm) and you use appropriate bolts to keep the chainline happy, no problem at all.
I think you'll need to put some spacers between the new chainring and the tabs on the SLX cranks, otherwise the chain rubs on the tabs as there isn't enough clearance
