Having given it a good battering, I’m looking to build up my 2014 specialized awol as a 1x10 commuter/weekend camping rig (Ditching the drops bars too). Going 11-42 at the rear (undecided on front ring as yet). I’m on a low budget but looking for things that’ll work straight out of the box (I’m no advanced bike mechanic). I’m getting old too so don’t really care about aesthetics!
Any advice on what derailleur/shifter combo to go with?
I've got a medium cage SLX mech and deore shifter on my hardtail with that cassette. Its actually been on four different frames now! Works perfectly for not much money.
You need a 9 speed mtb derailleur for 10sp road, I used an SLX for similar. Or get a 'Derailleur Extender Link' for a 10sp road shifter, also done that. Edit, just noticed you are dropping the drops.
I think that Deore 10-speed is the only one that goes up that big and has exactly the right pull ratio for a Shimano 10-speed MTB shifter.
The 11-speed SLX/XT/XTR ones are very close to the right ratio and seem to work fine in the real world with a 10-speed cassette and shifter.
11-speed XT mech on a 10-speed Sunrace cassette, with 10-speed SLX shifter. Works fine for me.
(KMC chain and Raceface crankset just to make sure nothing matches at all...)
11 speed mech and 10 speed shifter would be my go to if buying new and wanting minimal fiddling.
Ive got a 10 sp SLX medium cage working fine with 11-42 10 speed.
I have an M6000 10spd shifter, cranks of some description, M6000 10spd rear mech, Sunrace MS3 11-42 10spd all used but not in use here if you’d consider 2nd hand.
I'm running a regular MTB xt 10sp clutch mech witha 42t subrace cassette. B screw would in a bit. Not actually ridden it in anger yet - just up and down the road!
Deore M4100 shifter and Deore M4120 rear mech
Thanks all. Appreciate the tips!
