I've got a 2006 stumpy which has a fox float r brain fade (remote). I want to replace it with an rp23 but am unsure about size. the 06 comp has a triad which is 7.5 x 2. Is mine the same dimension as this and if so i think i will have to go for a 7.875 x 2 rp 23 as a 7.5 x 2 would hit the frame? I would just keep my shock as it has been fine but it needs a service which will cost 150 as its a brain and it needs a new shock shaft aswell on top of that so it would be cheaper to buy a second hand rp23.

Ok it's not the one with the brain fade shock (that doesn't list shock dimensions) but the website quotes the other '06 stumpjumper models as 7.5 x 1.75

yep that's where i got my figure from too but im still not sure as i measured my shock and i'm pretty sure it's not 1.75. I don't suppose they'd make different model stump jumpers with different size shocks in the same year though so i guess it must be 7.5 x 1.75. I will do some experimenting but im pretty sure the 7.5 x 2 will hit the frame so looks like it will have to be a 7.875 x 2. What will this do to frame angles and therefore the bikes handling?

My '08 StumpJumper is 7.25 x 1.75 (or 184.2x44.5 in new money) and from 2012 Fox do an RP23 in that size.

If the 7.5 above is a typo and it is really 7.25 - it should fit fine. If not - no idea, I'm afraid.

I run my 06 s-works stumpjumper with the Float RL (with ITCH switch) off my old 03 Enduro. According to specialized it measures 7.625" x 2.0".
Whilst it fits, it does tend to foul on the weld on the linkage which i've found tends to put extra force on the lower bushes. This means i have to replace the lower bush pretty much every 8-10 rides?? I'm currently trying a stainless strong bush that i'm hoping will last a bit longer

I've also found that the extra shock length has screwed the geometry up a fair bit even with a 130mm fork up front. Whilst it's cracking on the cross country i always feel like i'm sat over the front wheel when it comes to the steep downhill's.

Hope this helps!!

Hmm ok. think i might just stick with my shock unless i can get a newer one in the same size. does anyone else have experience of putting a longer shock on a bike?

From all the research I have done, the s-works has a 7.5x1.75 shock the same as the other models.

I also have a 2006 s-works brain fade. I can't say I have ever been happy with the shock. It never lived up to my late Eli (swinger 4way). After having a serious crash in October (Pogo over handlebar - i'm putting 75% blame on the rear shock) i've vowed never to ride the brain shock again. I've been doing lots of research and come to the same conclusions as the above posts. I'm not taking any chances in fitting any other size shock than the one that is supposed to be on there. I've read some posts saying if you fit a 7.5x2.0 the extra stoke will cause linkage to come into contact with the seat tube.

I have found out that suspension servicing places (like TF) can actually change the stroke of a shock. So, my plan is to source a RP23 (7.5x2.0) that needs a service, send that off to TF and get it destroked and re -shimmed to suit the SJ.

@h4muf - looking forward to hearing how you get on with the RP23....

Hi.

Not been out on it yet but i only bought it because it was on a frame for sale in these classifeds.
I too was paranoid about it fitting but it looks right and feels ok (only been around the garden on it)
