Bike Check: Jordy Scott’s Dual Slalom Hyper

Jordy Scott is one of those up and coming riders that might not have come onto your radar unless you follow the Crankworx scene. She was just about to go and compete in Dual Slalom but took a moment to have a chat. Expect to see more from her as the season and years go by.

Hi Jordy, so what you are racing this weekend?

I’m racing Dual Slalom in about 30 minutes, so I’m getting ready to go out there.

Thank you for taking the time to talk to us just now. How’s practice been?

Yeah, it’s been good. The track’s kind of been getting easier, maybe throughout the weekend. When we first rode it, there was just a lot of lines that had never been ridden before, so we can actually see where we’re going now, but we keep getting faster. So as the track gets better, we push harder and things get harder. So it’s fun though. It’s tricky and definitely pushing us to our limits.

And can you tell us anything about the setup that you’ve got here?

Yeah so I let a little bit of pressure out of everything. I have about 25 PSI in front and rear right now, tyre wise. I have like 150 in my fork, like three volume spacers so just enough to, in the really peaky roller sections, just to keep it so I’m not bottoming out at all. I let some air out of my rear shock. Usually I have it about like 280, I’m running 250 right now, so that’s doing the job. This is like a mini mullet setup, so I have a 26 in the rear, 27.5 in the front. Super fun on this track. So definitely getting the job done and yeah, it’s nice to be able to adjust things and actually feel like they’re working. So cool.

Now then, everyone else I’ve spoken to has been putting everything in for dual slalom rather than taking PSI out. So what’s your normal setup geared for?

Um, so my normal setup is geared for kind of the Crankworx tracks that are a little bit more BMX. And so they’re really just like rollery and the flat turns have pretty good traction. Whereas here everything’s been super rough and you’re just trying to like hold, have traction and having a little bit less PSI lets me just like sink into my travel a bit more. And if I let off the brakes, it’s really absorbing everything for me. So yeah, usually I have it set up for a bit more rollery type stuff and really, really fast berms where you’re pushing as hard as you can. These berms, you kind of have to be careful with them and cut them weird, so yeah just a little different to what I’m used to but it’s fun.

What does the season ahead look like for you?

I’m super excited to finish college in two weeks and graduate, I’m so happy about that! And then two weeks after that I go to Australia up to Cairns and race the next Crankworx stop, spend two weeks down in Brisbane in Australia just a little in between races to save money so I don’t have to go home. And then head over to Innsbruck in Austria and race the next stop of Crankworx, then go home for a month and head to Whistler.

And what events will you be doing at Crankworx?

I’ll be doing dual slalom, speed and style, pump track, a little bit of downhill, air downhill – whatever’s there, I’m doing it. So yeah, I’m trying to go for the overall this year. Ended up third two years ago and getting injured in the last event and the last race, it was a lot. Hopefully that doesn’t happen this year. But yeah, excited to be back and just having a super good time.

Cool, and do you have any new tricks that you’ve been working on for this year?

It’s hard with speed and style because you can feel so comfortable with a trick, but when you’re doing it at full speed, just ready to risk it all, it’s a little scarier. But yeah, I’m hoping to pull out a 360 at one of the stops if I can. That’s definitely in my bag. I might go to a few slope competitions as well after Whistler. There’s some stuff going on in Canada, so that should be fun to mix it up a little bit. But yeah, hoping to pull that one out at one of the Cranworx stops.

Thank you very much. We’ll let you get ready for this dual slalom and we’ll be looking out for that 360!

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
