Bespoked Bike Check: SUBA FLOW

Bespoked Bike Check: SUBA FLOW

For the first time ever, the Bespoked Bike Show has left the UK and is taking place in Dresden, Germany. From 13th-15th October, people are able to go and peruse gorgeous hand built bikes and accessories, and chat to their makers. Sadly we couldn’t make the trip this year, so we’re bringing a taste of the show to these pages. Maybe it’ll make you wish you were there enough to get organised for next time.

Spanish enduro-sled anyone? In Barratts Jelly Spog flavour? Or is it Drumstick Squashies?

SUBA FLOW

Benjamin is based in Spain, Barcelona and in the three years he’s been building bikes, he’s already built around 150. Working exclusively in steel, he builds everything from full suspension enduro bikes to gravel bikes. This SUBA FLOW is a brazed steel 29er with 2.6in tyre clearance.

‘Our new born shares the same DNA with our actual range of frame, a blend of simplicity, versatility and strong temper. In fact, this bike has always existed, at least in our wildest dreams!

‘We wanted to create a full suspension frame that could combine the best experience collected for the past years on different bikes, tinted by our own very personal vision. It was then obvious the single pivot was the best suspension platform for our frame, adding pull rods to master all kinematics curves (our dog bones), we took advantage of this layout to create 3 different geometries around 1 base frame.

This bike had to use a gearbox for its simplicity and numerous advantages (reduced unsprung mass, low maintenance), and because we didn’t want to be stuck with one solution (think about bike park laps on a single speed?!) we created a universal cradle to combine any kind of transmission available today. So derailleur routing, twin housing gear selector -think Pinion- or retaining spring -like Effigear’s- finds their way the elegant way alongside the downtube.

‘On top of that, we could includes cool some cool features such as a floating caliper to free the suspension from braking forces, opening fields to design the best pedalling bike. A big move was to run outside all housings and brake lines, built a square beam to reinforce the heart of our systems.

Here we are, 9 months away from the beginning of the journey, and from now on this is up to you to write the rest of the story!

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
