Bespoked Bike Check: Kutaloni Presto

Bespoked Bike Check: Kutaloni Presto

For the first time ever, the Bespoked Bike Show is leaving the UK and taking place in Dresden, Germany. From 13th-15th October, people will be able to go and peruse gorgeous hand built bikes and accessories, and chat to their makers. Sadly we couldn’t make the trip this year, so we’re bringing a taste of the show to these pages. Maybe it’ll whet your appetite to head along, or maybe it’ll make you wish you were there enough to get organised for next time.

Kutaloni Presto

This is a bicycle with a wooden frame; to reduce weight, it is empty inside. This is completely handmade. It will suit any person who wants to show their individuality

  • Builder: Serhii Kutalo
  • Brand: Kutaloni
  • Web: kutaloni.com
  • Price: £3000

Serhii has been building bikes for four years in Ukraine, where he’s built 17 bikes. However, he’s had to start again from scratch in Daventry, England. He works exclusively in wood. ‘I’m a beginner manufacturer. I have two models so far. Walking model and cross-country model.

Favourite part about the build process?:

Probably – applying varnish! This is very pleasant, at this moment the varnish changes the color of the wood, the structure of the fibers appears, and you see the result of your work.

Most challenging part of the build?:

During processing and gluing, wood becomes deformed and tries to get out of control – it is very difficult to maintain the evenness of the structure!

Feature you’re most pleased with?:

Excellent vibration damping and smooth ride

Any lessons learnt or things you’d do differently next time?:

Before releasing the model for sale, I made prototypes that revealed shortcomings. I don’t want to change anything in this model.

Details of any optional extras customers can choose.:

Additionally, we make steering wheels, seats, pedals, protective covers for wheels and sprockets from wood.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
