If you read our feature in issue 140 of Singletrack World Magazine, you’ll know that the Capital Trail can be ridden over a leisurely-ish couple of days in the company of friends, food, pubs and the like. Or, you could decide the the 240km 5,200m elevation route should be tackled in 24 hours.

Is the greater suffering to be had in riding light and fast and no sleep, or carrying all your gear and sleeping in the wild? Or, for the glass half full crowd, which offers most fun? Riders Janey and Fi were all set for the Strathpuffer when it was cancelled, so rather than put all their training to waste they set about riding the Capital Trail in one fast fell swoop – mostly in the dark to boot. To inspire you to similar actions, put you in awe of their achievements, or convince you never to try anything so ridiculous, they’ve made a video about it, which you can watch, here:

Back in January, Janey and Fi set out on an attempt to ride the Capital Trail in one push – a 240km bike packing route around Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders, normally tackled over three steady days. With 5200m of climbing and 17 hours of darkness coupled with winter conditions under tyre, they certainly had their work cut out. Give the video a watch to find out how they got on…

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
