New Canyon Torque – carbon, metal, and all the wheel sizes

The new Canyon Torque is officially revealed today – though you may have spotted Tommy G was riding the carbon fibre model at Red Bull Rampage back in October.

There are six models of Canyon Torque available, two in aluminium and four in carbon fibre. Both aluminium models will be available in a choice of 29er or 27.5in set ups, while the carbon fibre models offer a selection of 27.5in, 29er or mullet selections. The different wheel sizes use different rear triangles, so you’ve effectively got ten different bikes to be choosing from, depending on your riding style and goals. Here’s what Canyon has to say:

The goal with the Torque was to make it excel both on jump lines at the bike park and on more technical trails inside or outside the park. While the Torque can still lay down some rapid splits on an Enduro stage (especially in 29er form), it was also built burly enough to take on freeride duties. Slap a double crown fork on a 27.5” frame and there is no reason why the Torque shouldn’t end up on a trip to the Utah desert.

Canyon

In terms of travel, all 29” Torque models are 170 mm F / 170 mm R and all 27.5” Torque models are 180mm F / 175mm R. The Mullet gets a 29er front end and 27.5 back end, meaning 170 mm F/ 175mm R. Tested to the same downhill standards as the Sender, the Torque has already proven it’s up to the big stuff by being ridden at Red Bull Rampage. The bikes are dual crown compatible, but will ship with single crown forks.

The frames have both been completely redesigned, and follow the longer/slacker/steeper trend – plus the changes have made way for a bottle cage. There’s no adjustable geometry on the aluminium models, but the carbon fibre frame comes with flip chips as used on the Canyon Spectral. The pivot bolts on the carbon models can be replaced at home, but the advice is you’ll need a trained mechanic to replace them on the metal frame.

Is this the bike you need for those big bike park days out? Or perhaps your local trails justify such a bike? Or are you going to have to move house because you really need THAT Torque 5 in THAT colour scheme? You know what we mean. And at £2,649, there’s plenty of money left over for uplift passes…hmm?

They’re available now, head to the Canyon website for more information or to order.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
