For Spring 2021 Five Ten is launching the popular Freeride and Freerider Pro shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic, here’s a first look.
Five Ten being part of the larger Adidas brand is able to make use of the sportswear giant’s R&D facilities and this means when Adidas makes a major breakthrough then so does Five Ten. The new Parley Primeblue Freerider Pro shoes (Freerider also available) uses the same recycled plastic material that Adidas has been using in some of its footwear for the past few years, but as the parent company is ramping up its efforts to move away from virgin polyester Five Ten has now been included in this environmentally-friendly move.

The new Five Ten shoes boast that same sticky Stealth sole that makes Five Ten so popular with the flat pedal crowd, but these recycled versions use a Primeblue Parly Recycled Ocean Plastic upper. Plastic waste is collected from oceans and through various processes is turned into a material perfect for lightweight sports shoes. In the case of the Freerider Pro, the Parley Blue material gains some toe box armour, but the entire upper uses this woven recycled material.
I don’t have scales to hand, but the Pro certainly feels lightweight in the band and comfortable when wearing them. The shoe is obviously aimed at dry conditions and summer riding, but we wonder if the material might be faster drying? I’m sure this is something we’ll be testing in no time.

Apart from the recycled material the Primeblue Parley Freerider Pro is like your typical Freerider Pro with a simple lace fitment, elastic lace retention and a mesh inner for breathability. Hannah and I both have the new shoes and will be putting them to the test over the coming months so keep an eye out for an update.
