Formation | Behind The Scenes At The Women’s Freeride Camp

This year’s Formation freeride progression camp for women had very low key media coverage so that the athletes could focus on the riding. As a result, there wasn’t too much by way of images and video coming out of the event. However, Red Bull sponsored freeskiier Michelle Parker took her film crew along to film an episode of her documentary series ‘Originate’.

This short film provides some more insight into what it meant to the riders there, and some of the challenges they faced in adapting to the exposed terrain. There are certainly a few spots of onboard footage that will make your legs wobble. And if they don’t, maybe you should be trying to catch the attention of the organisers in the hope of attending next year’s event? Katie Holden, who pulled it all together, hopes to grow the event to something bigger, until there’s a whole swathe of female freeriders with the skills and experience needed to tackle the Utah terrain. Or, maybe, elsewhere in the world too? When we spoke to Veronique Sandler, she suggested that a possible format could be a series of events or workshops in different locations around the world.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
