Road cycling world champion Peter Sagan is returning to his dirt covered roots at Rio 2016 this summer, where he will be competing in the Cross Country event at the Olympics.
The Slovakian started his cycling career on a mountain bike, going on to win the 2008 Men’s Junior World Championship in Val di Sole. Unfortunately – not too long after – Sagan took up the opportunity to ride on-the-road for the Liquigas-Doimo team, after rejecting a contract offer from Cannondale MTB. The rest is history.
Here are five signs that Sagan should have never taken to the tarmac…
1 – Rad Hair
Just look at it, look at it! It even has its own Tumblr blog page.
Latest Singletrack Merch
Buying and wearing our sustainable merch is another great way to support Singletrack

Obviously a haircut shouldn’t decide which discipline suits best, but when you look as cool as Sagan does you need to be competing in the coolest sport ever (no bias at all, promise).
2 – Bike Hopping Mad Skills
Sagan just knows how to celebrate…

And if you needed any more proof…

But all that winning must have been backed with huge amounts of preparation…
But he still only a mere mortal like the rest of us…
3 – Unconventional and Unshaven Legs
The man just personifies the word unconventional. Whilst most people would be happy with a small country church and golf club reception for their wedding, Sagan had a different idea…

“F**k you aerodynamics”. Most roadies would shriek at the thought of hair-covered legs, but Sagan threw science out of the window. Who needs to shave off seconds when you can have legs that don’t look like they belong to a 10-year-old boy? Sagan is far too cool for that…

… although admittedly he did say the reason for not shaving was that he simply had no time, but that make’s him even more laid-back and cooler, right?
4 – THE TOURMINATOR!
Quite possibly the best nickname to ever grace the road (excluding “Der Panzerwagen” himself Tony Martin).

He earned the nickname due to his downright unforgiving strength and aggression on the bike, which has cost his team’s mechanics a fair amount of wheels over the years.
5 – Brilliance and Craziness
Five reasons is just not enough. Sagan is a legend who wins both on and off the track.

A personality like his is just a breath of fresh hair for the sport, but Peter, if you are reading this, on behalf of the whole mountain biking community, we would love it if you stayed with us.
Of course take this with a pinch of salt. After all, cycling is just cycling and there is no point getting into a discussion about which discipline is better…
… because there is no argument; Mountain biking rules all!

I have skills and hair envy, he’s just so brilliant.
One reason he got on a road bike – success!
And because he can. Ride Le Tour? Yeah alright.
And his salary, before his other personal endorsements is probably more than all the pro mtb riders put together
